I'd say that the saddest day in the South's history is the day that South Carolina chose to seceded, and the others followed. That was what kicked off a war that could not be won and would leave a wound that still hasn't completely healed today.

The North fired on itself at Fort Sumter? I had no idea!

You can thank Andrew Johnson for the wounds not completely healing, in my opinion.

A victory at Gettysburg would only have turned into a total victory for the Confederacy if Lee had managed to march on Washington and dictate terms to Lincoln in the White House. That wouldn't have happened due to the fact that the defensive ring around Washington was the most impregnable in the world at that time.

I’m also not sure if Lee would’ve done that. Remember, Lee didn’t want the war, and he most certainly didn’t want to march on D.C.

I'm not sure what there was to continue. The South was in ruins by this point and most of it had been pacified.

Lee's position was untenable by this time and virtually surrounded with Sheridan in place to deliver a death blow. TBH, Lee should have given up the fight after Grant arrived after Grant had had 2 army corps surrender to him at Vicksburg and Chattanooga. Grant and the Union controlled most of the confederacy from the Mississippi to Virginia. Lee's continued fighting in Northern Virginia was gratuitous and .....murderous.

Grant and Sheridan had Lee running in circles in N. VA and Sherman had devastated Georgia and the Carolinas and was moving up. New Orleans was in firm control of the Union as was Mobile. Game, set, match!!!!

You know what you said isn't true.

i do know it is true, the world was on the brink of destruction from a force with one goal.

The South wasnt oppressing the North. The North going to scorched Earth warfare and torture was extremely unethical and against what war was at the time.

You seem to forget that when slavery was implemented it wasn’t just the south that had slaves.

The definition of war has been the same throughout history.

The south was footing the bill for the whole country with taxes and tariffs but received very little representation in government. It was like we did all the work and didn't get paid for it. A few people grumbled about this and Lincoln sent his jackboot thugs to punish the south. As a southerner, we are still oppressed today

I mean, yeah, but succession was a foregone conclusion by that point.

Actually the north showed up and evicted thousands of black people out of their homes leaving them without a way to make a living or even get food. Also many of them were forcefully conscripted

It's really not clear that Lincoln could have sold the war effort if South Carolina hadn't fired on Sumter. As always, I blame Spurrier.

The Confederacy was toast staring in 1862 when Farragut sailed up the Mississippi, blasted his way past Forts St. Philip and Jackson and trained his guns on the the levees in NOLA coupled with the Union being able to land a huge army at Shiloh and run pretty much unmolested in that area, not to mention the fact that the Union had possession of Nashville at that time.

When your opponent can bottle up the largest port and land troops en masse, in the center of your country, you cannot win the war nor can you hope for stalemate. Lee should have gone to Jefferson Davis and said, "Go make a deal with Mr. Lincoln.

If that did not make you think as the Confederate braintrust, then the fall of Vicksburg coupled with the loss at Gettysburg should have been like scalding hot coffee in your face

Laugh all you want but the term “home front” didn’t become en vogue until WWI. We were bombing strategic cities those days because of their continual armament and supplying of our enemy. What Grant and Sherman did was wholesale slaughter of innocents.
