The Valley Campaign was impressive, but his efforts at the Seven Days Battle in 1862 leave something to be desired as were his moves at Kernstown.
I doubt though that he would have fared well against Grant. Say what you want, but he knew how to use his resources better than anyone else in the war. He decimated Pemberton at Champion Hill and Vicksburg and had an entire Army surrender in the process, then he went to Chattanooga and along with Thomas obliterated Bragg and Breckenridge.
I really think Grant is not given the credit as an outstanding commander that he deserves

It also led to the rift between Lee and Longstreet. Longstreet had said that he did not think any group of men could have taken it not across a mile of open field with the artillery baring down on them.....Armstrong was there and he was no slouch as an artillery commander.

The exact opposite is true. Nobody that knows anything at all about the war would say that. He was known for his willingness to attack.
