I use the Unisom SleepTabs (doxylamine) .. i find that it’s slightly stronger than the SleepGels (diphenhydramine)- which is the same ingredient in Benadryl.. so i get better sleep, without as much of the hangover effect the next day.. so far I haven’t noticed any significant drop off in memory; hard to tell though since im a middle aged guy and some memory decline is expected.. however, when i was on Ambien regularly years ago, i noticed an insane amount of memory issues, it was really startling and alarming so i had to quit the Ambien cold turkey .

Melatonin does jack shite for me.. another example of why the ‘one size fits all’ approach some in this thread have tried to suggest is asinine .

Im a psychiatrist and only use evidence based supplements. I have chronic insomnia and this is mine— Magnesium taurate , melatonin, L-theanine, valerian tincture (1 dropper full)

Be careful of benadryl and unisom.. they are anticholinergic and long term use puts you at an increased risk of developing dementia at worst and brain fog at best.. theyre ok the odd 1-2 nights per week but avoid using nightly..

Try Delta 9 gummies. 10 CBT/ 10 THC. It's legal federally and in almost every state.

When first starting, cut them in half or even quarters.

What's the best OTC sleep aid? I haven't used them in a long time, but have had a run of sleepless nights lately and would like something that's not going to make me feel hung over in the morning like my current sleep aid bourbon

Turn off your TV and go to bed

What is ur opinion on Seroquel nightly for sleep ? I use many of the same herbal supplements you mentioned above and they work great to get me to sleep.. but if i wake up at 3am to pee, they do nothing to help me return to sleep.. Unisom is the only thing ive found that lets me go back to sleep.. as you mentioned though, i worry about the long term effects with Unisom.. i recently spoke to a doctor friend of mine and he uses Seroquel b/c he says it allows him to return to sleep like Unisom but without any side effects.. the main side effect ive read about for Seroquel is weight gain, which of course i wouldnt love, but might be worth putting on a lb or two for a good sleep aid if it’s effective .

I took 50mg of diphenhydramine nightly for 2 years

Started suffering from memory loss more rapid than normal for my age

Found out it leads to being 6 X more likely to get early onset dementia

Haven’t taken one in over a year and doing much better now after struggling at first

I’m screwed

Seroquel

Man it works but its a messy drug that blocks dopamine and puts you at an increased risk of developing involuntary movements(tardive dyskinesia) because dopamine (and acetylcholine) plays a huge role in the motor cortex..also can cause metabolic disease long term use independent of secondary effects from weight gain

- as far as safe RX drugs for insomnia the safest imho are Ramelteon (meltatonin receptor agonist), trazodone and Dayvigo (basically inhibits wakefulness neurotransmitters)

After that the hypnotics - lunesta, ambien, sonata, temazepam (order of weakest to strongest in my clinical experience but everyones different)

Have a good bed time sleep ritual amd create good subconscious associations with sleep.. i have blue light blocking glasses ill put on at 8pm like clock work and i start yawning now after 5 minutes of putting em on

A routine is powerful. There’s nothing special about the blue light blockers themselves, your brain sends signals that it’s time to go to sleep when you have a consistent night time routine like that. Circadian rhythm is critical to health and longevity

Yeah ive tried all the good sleep hygiene practices for years and years, never drink coffee after 10am, cool, dark room at night, lots of cardio exercise to wear me out- some of us just have a hard time ‘shutting off’ our brains.. good insight on the Seroquel and other meds, thanks

diphenhydramine hydrochloride is generic benadryl. It's also Unisom and ZZquil and the active sleep ingredient in Tylenol PM, etc. It is absolutely linked to early onset dementia and short term memory loss. I take it fairly often and I'm trying hard to stop.

Is this an ingredient in the Purple Drank that #1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell used to drink during class?

If JaMarcus can stop, I am sure you also can.

It's better than no sleep or little sleep. There's still cholinergic burden associated with it so there's going to be higher risk for developing dementia down the road. Look up cholinergic burden and cholinergic load related to different meds. Ultimately talk it through with your doc and go from there.

A resting heart rate of 38?

You are either ill or your diagnostics are not trustworthy.

Maybe maybe not. My wearable tech numbers are consistently in the 30s at night. It is not unusual for mine to be in the low 40s at my desk at work and I am 57. It can be a sign of brady but it can also simply be "athlete's heart". Common in endurance athletes because the more you work your heart the stronger it gets and the more volume per pump so lower rate.

Note also the numbers are a true resting heart rate which is difficult to actually measure unless you do it immediately upon waking and before getting up and without being jostled awake by say an alarm.

They can accelerate the onset of dementia. Try anything else before you fall into that cycle.

If you are on them, think about if you have issues with name and vocabulary recall the next day.
