I've got a everyday watch that I can dress up with different bands. And I have a GPS watch for running and other outdoor activities. But that's not really the same thing. When I got my automatic, I thought I'd start collecting, and still hope to at some point. But life steps in. Maybe it's because I have a good "all around" watch already, but it's difficult to drop a few thousand on a watch multiple times. It wasn't too hard the first time, but the need/desire went away once I got the one I wear. Still want a birth year ('86 for me) submariner though followed by a legit dress watch.

Also, if you didn’t have a watch at all and had 1k to spend, knowing what you know, what would you get?
Probably a Sinn 556a, or an Oris Aquis.
ETA: I only have one watch right now. It's a Christopher Ward Trident. I got a good deal on it, and it's a great bang for your buck entry level automatic. I had a Hamilton Khaki King Auto too, but I gave it to my dad because it's a little large for my wrist.
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Tudor Black Bay 36. I'll probably wear that one as my "one watch" for a few years before I add another.

I appreciate the craftsmanship of automatics, and will definitely own more. They're just an extra step that a quartz doesn't require. Well, really an extra two steps since I have to set them after not remembering to put them on the winder before they die

One more than last week. Picked up a Black Bay Steel at the AD last Friday.

2 that I wear regularly

This is another plus of "no date" watches. They are super easy to set if the power reserve is depleted.
If you're only wearing one watch, you shouldn't have to keep it on a winder at all times. It should have a power reserve of at least 38 hours (or something around that).

I haven't timed it, but I can get around 36hrs out of my fully wound up Datejust. It isn't the only watch I wear. Haven't put it on since last Thursday

Put it on a leather strap or a NATO and you may be more apt to wear it. I couldn't stand wearing a bracelet, but I'm not drawn to watches with them anyway.

The level of your bracelet hatred is humorous

There is no way in hell I'm putting a $6500 watch on a $20 NATO strap and going out to cut the grass with it

Maratac NATO strap material probably has higher tensile strength than the links in any steel bracelet. My daily beater Seiko 5 has a nylon strap and it's held up to a helluva lot more than yard work.

Guy I work with rocks a Rolex with a Velcro strap. He has a few others so only wears that one occasionally

My point was that it looks janky, and the watch wasn't designed for most of my daily goings-on. Unless I'm in the shop, I'm outside getting dirty. Already today, there have been ample opportunities for me to scratch or break a nice watch

I sleep with my watch on
Weird?
Weird?

Watches should be on leather straps. It's not always practical since they'll soak up sweat, but every watch looks better on leather.

No, I typically do too.
I sleep pretty shittily, so I look at my watch several times during the night to see the time.
