WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for young adults age 12 and older by next week, according to a federal official and a person familiar with the process, setting up shots for many before the beginning of the next school year.

The announcement is set to come barely a month after the company found that its shot, which is already authorized for those age 16 and older, also provided protection for the younger group.

The federal official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to preview the FDA's action, said the agency was expected to expand its emergency use authorization for Pfizer's two-dose vaccine by early next week, and perhaps even sooner. The person familiar with the process, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters, confirmed the timeline and added that it is expected that the FDA will approve Pfizer’s use by even younger children sometime this fall.

I know parents of the OT will be lining up to get their teenagers vaccinated.

Q: What do you call a parent that puts an unknown vaccine in their children for a virus that doesn't effect them?

A: Child Abuser

they have to open up broader segments of the population so the media can continue to talk about vaccination rates and how we aren't at a high enough level for unmasking and such

If the goal remained flattening the curve then yeah. But the goalpost quickly shifted to everyone needs to be vaccinated so we can open up. That isn’t really organic capitalism. Many people are getting vaccine not out of fear of the disease but bc of a desire to “get back to normal”.

I guess the next safe assumption is that all children must be vaccinated before returning to school next Fall?

is that really that safe of an assumption considering college systems all across the country have already said they won't require vaccination next fall?

Google California universities & the COVID-19 vaccine news from yesterday. And when you search Google for “Colleges requiring COVID-19 Vaccine” a convenient CNN article pops up at the top saying as of April 29th 100 colleges already will require it.

Duke
Michigan
Wake Forrest
Brown
Rutgers
Stanford
Boston College
Princeton
Harvard
St John’s
Syracuse
Loyola
Colorado (+ University of Colorado system)
DePaul
St Mary’s
Notre Dame
John Hopkins
Dartmouth
UMass
Washington (+ University of Washington system)
All University of California System Schools

just to name a few big name schools I’ve read about in the last week

I love reading the news story comments on Facebook about any vaccine stories, but especially any talking about moving to younger ages. Brings out all the FB MDs and nut cases.

I'll wait until the vaccine is officially approved and off the "for emergency use" designation by the FDA. Until then, thanks guinea pigs.

Correct. You brought up that point. I rattled off 20-25 name brand colleges that have already stated they will require the vaccine by next Fall. Like your sweeping assumption, I’ll make an assumption in that more names will be added to that list than the “won’t require COVID19 vaccine” list between now and August.
