High mileage Honda of Toyota sedan. Wish people would stop buying their kids large SUVs because they are safer. Yeah let's put our worst drivers in the largest vehicles on the road

I had to buy cars for 2 kids. My only concern is safety and it not breaking down. I went with a 4Runner and GMC truck each about 5 years old and lower miles. Price doesn’t matter when they have an accident.

Also look at 1999-2005 Lexus IS300s and GS300s. The 2JZ motor is one of the best ever made. My DD is a 2002 GS300 and is the smoothest, quietest car I've ever owned.

Is insurance high on that? I've always heard that rates for Lexus vehicles were steep...

I’m gonna throw my hat in with the early 2000s 4Runner.
My parents bought me a 2007 4Runner in 2011 with 63k on it CPO.
That car got me through the end of high school, college, graduate school, and my first 3 years out working.
Stupid me let the shiny new bug bite me and I traded it in on a new Audi in 2020. Should have never gotten rid of it and that thing was still running like a champ with 170k on it when I sold it.

The rapper Juvenile even promotes those. In his song "Set It Off" he says that he is going to: "Buy a 4Runner"...

a manual transmission.
I always point out that a manual uses a decent amount of bandwidth for a new driver, and while it MAY discourage them from multitasking in the event of an emergency the extra bandwidth needed may be the difference between an accident and avoiding one. Simple is better for new drivers.

Question is …do you buy him some old POS with a ton of miles knowing he’s going to wreck it, or some decent POS hoping he can drive it a few years?
I ended up getting my kid a 4Runner - you’re gonna spend more than you want especially back when I had to pull the trigger.

Ford Mustang with a 6 cylinder in it. They're really pretty damn good cars, and easy to work on, if you ever need to.

I bought mine a little Hyundai Elantra for 18K, he has the learners permit and will be fully licensed in march.

Find a 10-12 year old Impala or Buick with the 3.5 liter engine. Safe and reliable.

It's just based on the replacement value of the car. Mine is only worth maybe $5K, so I only have liability at $40/month. A $5K car is a $5K car to the insurance company unless they're well known to get wrecked often like Mustangs because stupid young kids drive them like assholes.

It's more of a convenience to the parents these days. Both my kids were excellent students, no trouble and tons of scholarships. I gladly bought them vehicles. Neither one were really super excited about the prospect, they both realize the responsibility.

My children won't get their own car until after college.
My father bought me a SUV in HS. I got into 3 wrecks between HS and 1st year of college.
No insurer would take me on. I was left without a car at college. I had to essentially bum a ride to LSU everyday. I got dropped off at LSU in the AM and sat there all day until I got picked up at 6PM.
Difficult but I graduated and bought a brand new Tundra. Most wrecks were off my record by then and insurance was affordable. $225/mo in 2008. Expensive but yeah.
Don't want my kids dealing with the stress, etc. that comes with a vehicle. Focus on school.
I'll put them in their own apt or on campus housing.

As mentioned above, it's more of a convenience for the parents. High school kids have school, sports practice, band, cheerleading, jobs, etc. If a kid is doing everything right (staying out of trouble, making good grades, working and/or doing extra-curriculars) then why not?

if all conditions above are met and the kid is responsible I can see it, with limitations, but not being blessed with a car just because they’ve a chronological mile marker
