Workplace has signs saying zero tolerance policy for workplace violence. Everywhere. Office type environment.. if you are assaulted, should you cover up and walk away or do you have right to defend yourself.
Everyone has a right to defend, but if I defend myself, I am in violation of the company policy ie: I was violent. Can I be fired for defending myself?
I know what the baws on here would do but what does the law say are my rights?

Yes you can.

You have a legal right to defend yourself but they have a right to let both of you go for violating the companies policy.

Defending yourself doesn't mean you have to be violent back.

Sounds similar to someone I know through the wife (no pics) friend's boyfriend who works at a psych center and is having to go through a legal process now because of defending himself.

Better to be judged by HR than carried by 12.

Workplace Violence used to be throwing hands at the a-hole boss or inconsiderate co-worker. Now it's escalated to slinging lead and dropping half the dayshift into the dirt.

Do what ya gotta do to make it home at end of day.

Clown world needs a sign to remind people that physically attacking someone is off limits.

As an adult, I wouldn't want to work any place where workplace violence is an actual thing.

You're mixing up rights that the government can't hold against you vs. private individuals.

My wife gave a coworker a ride home from work at the request of her boss, this was before we got married 15 plus years ago. The chick attacked her and tried to steal a bracelet then stole her keys and ran up to her apartment. The first reaction the employer fired the attacker immediately and made my wife go to the doctor to evaluate the scratches and slight bruising from the altercation. They changed their tune when the attacker lawyered up. The lawyer got her off of the assault, battery, petty theft and grand theft charges, but that was not enough. He got her job back plus pay for the time she didn't work when she was fired. They tried to make a compromise with my wife that she would not have to work if the attacker was at work, but WTF? They ended up sending the attacker to another location and she ended up attacking a customer a few weeks later. After the attackers lawyer threatened the company they said they couldn't pay my wife's medical bills because that would show they were taking a side or some BS. Her GM squashed that BS and paid for it out of his budget, he had no choices with any other matter, all lawyers controlled that shite. Good luck.

Why would you not defend yourself? I would hope they wouldn't punish someone who defends themselves, isn't that a natural action for most people? Someone does something to you, you go back at them.
