When I called the local police station to see if the police report was enough, they basically said “idk.”
Oh lord... that does remind me of the kind of shite I used to hear in Mississippi.
"If I drive up there and bring X, Y, and Z, will you be able to do A and B?"
"Uhhh, I don't know."
Like, WTF do you not know right now that you will know tomorrow after I've wasted $11 dollars and a couple of hours getting to you? Dealing with that kind of attitude was a big part of making it through college there.

So where is this going on? West Point? Eupora? Brooksville?

Don’t know about Mississippi but in Louisiana they would have to give you your bike back. You didn’t authorize the work. They have to eat the loss.

Never would’ve thought CPD would be “closed” on a Friday. Pretty big town with plenty of problems. Best of luck to you, though. Hope you screw all of those shitbags over.

I’m interested to see how this turns out. I hope you go scorched earth on those folks because they are trying to strong arm you.
You are now in a position to be the “Righteous Hand of God” so to speak. Imagine how many folks they screwed along the way. You can be the porcupine that makes them scared of ever doing this again. Don’t waste this opportunity.

The repair shop has no legal reason to hold the bike. You, the lawful owner did not authorize the repairs. I'd probably offer to pay 1/3 of the bill which should cover their actual cost. It would be cheaper than securing a lawyer
Then sell it if you don't want it anymore

I am not a lawyer but I do drink on a regular basis, so that may help.
I wonder if the Mississippi Attorney General's office might be able to help. You are the victim of a crime and you know where your stolen property is located. They may be interested to know that a repair shop has your stolen property and is unwilling to return it to you.

Sounds like the mechanic should've taken the OP's first offer and got this monkey off of their back.
If I'm OP, I probably drive up there with a trailer and show up at the open of business to collect my possessions.
Sounds to me like they are retaining known stolen property in an attempt to extort the owner to pay for sub par business practices.

I wouldn't offer a penny.

Tell the lady that you are going to steal her car and drop it at a shop for a new engine and rims, then abandon it. I'm sure, given her position, that she will be happy to pay the $8,000 shop bill to get her own stolen car back.

Another update:
So the person that was supposed to help me bailed on Friday, so I was unable to go retrieve it. This morning, I received this in the mail with them doubling down on wanting payment for the bike. What’s funny is it looks like it’s coming from the repair shop, but it is actually coming from and signed by the wrecker company owner. In addition to that, they included an “invoice” for the services rendered now with MY name and not the original one with the person who dropped it off.
At this point, the money is lost to me. So if anyone in the area is interested in picking up this motorcycle from them, I will send you a copy of the police report and authorize you with the PD that you are coming on my behalf.
ETA: trying to get the picture to show up

Now they are stealing your shite. If I wasn’t planning to go get it before, this would make me go up there just on principle.
Posted on 1/23/21 at 12:27 pm to BruceJender
I’d get an attorney on them ASAP just out of principal. Either that or get the police on them for possession of stolen property.
ETA.
since they cannot show where you authorized any of the invoiced repairs, you don’t owe them shite.

Time to send this crew in. Get bike for free.
Posted on 1/23/21 at 1:19 pm to BruceJender
It seems like the police should have it at the station waiting for you to pick it up. You need to deal with the police only on this. Or an attorney.
Posted on 1/23/21 at 1:27 pm to BruceJender
Yeah I’d respond back to them and let them know that you’ve documented telling them that the bike is stolen so if they auction it off they’re knowingly selling stolen property.
Posted on 1/23/21 at 1:42 pm to JG77056
No way I'd let these pieces of shite get away with this unless I had zero time to deal with it or zero money to fight them. It's worth it to fight them just out of principle and make them pay the atty fees. Hell, I'd tell the atty that he/she could have the bike and any money awarded as payment just to sue the shite out of these people.

Yea- this would make me twice as motivated.
Even if I didn’t want to make the drive I’d write a demand letter for return of my stolen property and spend 5 minutes pulling any and all emails I could for fun to CC just to make them squirm.
Chief of police, city council members, local news, the insurance company you said she worked for, and maybe any licensing board affiliated - who knows, just all the low hanging fruit that would take about 2 minutes to pull and add.
Hell, if nothing else I’d not be taking the time to black out the shops name and contact info here.

At this point you probably could just explicitly ask for irl help from this board. If I wasn't 2000 miles away I'd pull a trailer and help just out of principle.
More than a few folks on here want to see those idiots get fricked.
