CNBC had a segment discussing the ratings, and they mentioned that. Also mentioned the lack of a comedian as host (their choice to go woke with Regina King), and no live music as part of the show. Failed to mention the fact that normal people weren't chomping at the bit to tune in for 3 hours of virtue signaling and getting preached at by self-obsessed hypocrites.
ETA: Girlfriend wanted to watch it so I said fine...heard the opening part where King said something along the lines of "we know you don't want to get preached at by people in Hollywood, but I fear for my children's lives...no amount of money or fame can make you feel safe"

I think award ceremonies in general are dying out....I've never understood the fascination with watching them.
The Oscars moreso than others do seem pretty set on trying to make themselves more and more disliked by the general public. "ooooo what off beat movie did Frances Mcdormand star in this year that we can hand awards to?????"

Shows despite the outsize vocal presence of a minority of the Guild (many actors, very few directors and producers) and of their media and advertising partners, that when push comes to shove the greater voting body still perceives themselves as awarding merit.

I never understood why people watched these awards shows anyways. Why the hell would I care if some actor gets an award for a movie?
