It's utterly amazing how the prog NPCs are all in lockstep with their reasons.

The Oscars were last night? And I missed it? Damn. I hate it when I miss Hollywood taking time out from molesting each other to lecture the rest of us on white supremacy and give each other awards.

Seriously. I am not going to pretend that, in this case, the constant virtual signaling caused me to quit watching like a lot of other award shows. I got tired of seeing awards handed to people/films that I never heard of and had no interest in ever watching. Plus all of these award shows are full of a bunch of strange people that are not at least entertaining.

that's my main thing about these awards. very rarely have i seen or heard of most of the shows before the nominations for the GGs come out. very occasionally will i try to go see one between the time nominations come out and the actual awards.

2012 and 2019 were the only years in a long time that multiple blockbusters were nominated, and even then, they gave it to the weird arthouse movie. 2021 had no nominated movies that i'd go see in theaters (sound of metal and Judas and the Black Messiah were good though)

This is honestly probably one of the biggest factors. Not a lot of movies came out that could gain popularity with the general crowd.

It’s much more fun to listen to people say it’s political tho

The show's choice to move Best Picture, the biggest prize of the night, from the last award to an earlier segment raised the most eyebrows. The consensus was that the show switched around the categories in hopes that Chadwick Boseman, the clear favorite for Best Actor who tragically passed away last year, would win. This would give the show and Boseman, who was nominated for his work in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," a huge emotional send-off.

Instead, the Oscars had an anticlimatic ending when the award went Anthony Hopkins for his performance in "The Father" instead. Hopkins wasn't even in attendance to accept the Oscar.

That can be said for many years though. A lot of the Oscar winners are usually not from the most popular movies. More many of these movies are ones critics think highly off but didn’t necessarily blow up at the box office

But At Least They Are Woke

Not really.

This year had a "historically diverse" slate of nominees and barely any of them won.

Old white man with a previous Oscar won Best Actor

Old white woman with a previous Oscar won Best Actress

Asian woman won Best Director

Best picture went to Asian woman's movie about an old white woman

I was in college/grad school. Streaming sites. Would either watch one in bed on the laptop before sleeping or in the library or at my GA job throughout the day etc....

once it becomes a "thing" you have to do it lol.

Guessing a lot of people didn't watch many, if any, of the nominated stuff so there wasn't much vested interest in it this year.

I typically see two or three of the movies nominated but this year I didn't see a single one although Sound of Metal looks good.

agreed, but what's crazy is that most of these are available with streaming. 5 years ago Manchester by the sea was the first streaming movie nominated (if memory serves me correctly) and things like fences, hell or high water, la la land were around for maybe a week or two in theaters.

this year mank, sound of metal, judas and the black messiah, trial of the chicago 7, and nomadland were all pretty much straight to streaming and i only watched 2 of them.

eta: part of that is a desire to see the movies as well. Trial of the Chicago 7 is literally socialist bullshite with rose colored glasses, mank is a hollywood circlejerk, and nomadland and the father just looked like another nebraska, favourite, marriage story, the wife etc. that were just slogs and gut punches to get through despite good performances.

Let's quickly dismiss the fact that either of them may actually have earned it.
