I am the boss. I seldom interact with the help.

I’ve never not gotten a bonus. I get a minimum and then it’s a % of profit above that, and we’ve done it every which way imaginable.

Had him hand me 25k and say have fun

Have had it handed to me and he say he’s sorry it’s not more when we both knew it wasn’t going to be good

Have expected more before and got the minimum. That was a kick in the nuts.

My favorite though was I got about 20k in Dec one year, and then he found a mistake in the bookkeeping and realized we had made more than anticipated. They could have swept it under the rug and not said a word to me. But instead, they tacked on another 10k on in January. That was a great day.

One company I worked for had a Christmas party where we received our bonuses. Everyone got their envelope and opened it at the table they were seated.

One year a co worker of mine put his 2 weeks notice in and his last day would be the Friday before new years. Worked the entire year. His “bonus” was gift certificates to restaurants. He was pissed. He did not cause a commotion mostly due to his wife calming him down. He never did any work the last week. He was done.

That was a shitty thing the boss/owner did to him. He worked late. He busted his arse and he never complained.

My boss is a woman who is located several states away. For every member of the team this Christmas, she got us some Oprah book about discovering your life’s purpose.

Amazon has a way of returning gifts where the sender will not be notified and your account will be credited. Just an FYI.

He put in his two week notice a week or so before getting year end bonus? Doesn't seem like the best strategy

I'm the boss and hand out the bonus checks. You should say thanks and wait.

I got a shirt with the company logo that is so ugly I wouldn't wear it to scrub gas station toilets.

Who still gets a check??? It comes direct deposit and we know well in advance what it is

Usually yes. We just had the founder of our firm surprise everyone with bonuses out of his own pocket. He is still majority owner but only has the title of chairman.

He took $5mm out of his own pocket and sent out bonuses based on tenure. Over 5 years got $10k less than a year got $1k.

Pretty cool surprise.

The funny part isn’t check, either. It’s bonus.

Open in front of and thank the boss since you got a bonus. If that boss made the decision. If the boss is just a messenger or deliverer of the bonus and had no decision making involvement, don’t open.
