I've been clinically depressed for twenty years.
Then I'd expect you would have not only compassion but also empathy for someone who was clearly struggling, instead of being callously judgmental of her.

quote:Yea it does. All your problems go away. I was just thinking about it earlier, as I was thinking about how my grandma went out (stroke) and suffered for the remaining years and how much it still hurts, as it was almost 20 years ago. I figured it will always hurt, even if I make it to 100 years old, so time won't heal it, and only through death can I truly forget about it and the memories not hurt. Morbid I know.
Death doesn’t heal shite

quote:No doubt and I wasn't defending her actions or suicide, just that time doesn't always heal all your wounds. Wondering if she had some traumatic event happen to her at some point in her life?
But opens new ones in those you leave behind.
Suicide just transfers the pain.

High achievers and perfectionists fear failure. You hear stories all the time about young people who have everything going their way, and decide to check out. People living charmed lives never learn how do deal with the idea that they will someday experience failure. They also don't know how to deal with adversity as well.
MIT had, and probably still does a very high suicide rate among students. Their typical student was stellar academically in high school, usually having never made a grade less than A. They arrive at MIT were they are then just a average student among their peers and make their first C and it is devastating to them. They have never been less than perfect, and have not developed the emotional maturity to handle what is a non-problem for most of us.

quote:exactly what I was thinking. Says she feels nothing then goes on to list all these things she loves and enjoys in life and how she will miss them and then does it anyway. Very sad.
she takes the time to list the things she's going to miss (the things worth living for) and then kills herself anyway.

That is just bizarre. She lists all the things she loves about life- and then ends her life?
Everyone has problems, but damn....This is never the correct answer. I wish she'd have at least sought help before making her existence end.
Not to be callous, but everything she listed was superficial.
This was, sadly, her problem. She valued food and travelling more then friends and family.
Everything she listed that gave her joy was only for a fleeting moment in time. And frankly, not one of them is important.
Relationships and accomplishments are far more valuable to the human mind. Please make sure everyone you care for is aware of this fact. Many people are not. Travelling the world is great, eating fancy food is great. Sipping coffe while appreciating amazing views is great. But none of that is important. Strong interpersonal relationships and individual accomplishments are far more important.
I wish for the best to those she left behind.

And you've proved to the board you don't understand how debilitating depression can be. It impedes everything. If she had sought treatment, she may have realized there is more worth to her life than what she listed. She wasn't seeing things through a clear lens. She obviously wasn't well when she wrote this as she subsequently hung herself. Compassion: you should try to have some.
I don’t get this line of thinking and agree with Huey.
My doc in college came to the conclusion I was depressed, gave me anti-depressants and what not and they sucked arse.
The stigma of depression is bullshite IMO and most people fall into that state due to their own actions or lack thereof.
I made life changes and stopped taking the pills and I started feeling way better and my life improved.
People who let it overtake their lives are weak minded and the empathy they receive only reinforces that mindset.

She is basically saying she loves these things, but despite loving things, she cannot feel true joy. That is the hopelessness she feels.
Is the feeling of hollow “joy” truly that rare? Seems like it given some comments in the thread.
Things you enjoy but it doesn’t quite bring the same fulfillment it used to. Or the empty feeling where you remark to yourself that you think you should feel/enjoy more what you are partaking in.
That was this girl’s entire life.

In every way except one, I know exactly how she feels.
The thought of not continuing this adventure has always been incomprehensible.
I'll give her this, I listened to an Al Green song because of her.

That was difficult to read and thank you for sharing. My daughter suffers from depression and outwardly is an engaging, succesful and seemiongly happy person. I worry about her a lot. She goes to therapy once a week so I hope that it's helping here to find a place in her mind where she feels balanced.

Not sure if this has been addressed, but in an otherwise very matter of fact letter this stood out to me
She slipped "alone" in there. Thought that was interesting and telling.

I'll say, at least she didn't desert children.
