re: One Triathlete Dead and Another Critical; Driver Charged (update in OP)

Isn't the picture of the shoulder in the OP the correct road? There's 4-5 feet for cyclists, a rumble strip (another foot), and a half foot before the white line. Then a car doesn't fill up the whole lane unless it's a wide body. That seems like plenty of space, and on pretty open country roads, how inattentive does one need to be to go over 3 feet, feel the jarring rumble, and not see the two 1.5'x5' foot profile of the cyclists?
I drive that stretch of road daily and have cycled it often when training. Cyclists there typically stay on the right close to the line, but do not cross the rumble strip. The wide shoulder you see right of the rumble strip is full of debris that will cut road tires up. I got two flats on the way to the rigolets when training alone because I felt safer on the shoulder.
As a driver, I have come to expect cyclists on weekends and holidays, and as a (former/infrequent) cyclist I pay attention to it and get in the left lane when I approach them. Some drivers, not so much.

Just saw three cyclist leave from Burbank/ Lee McDonald's parking lot at 6:00am. It's foggy as hell, and pitch black outside. Just doesn't seem like a good idea even if you have lights on your bike.
I'm not challenging their right to ride the streets, I do it to at times; its just hard to see a car this morning.

So, with damage on the diver side of the vehicle either the driver or the cyclist was definitely in the wrong here. This isn't a case of being sideswiped or anything.
Great work Sherlock

This is the scariest time ever to be riding on two wheels. I am moving to off road and trails only. I pass by people in traffic and am amazed how many are looking at their damn phones. I always point it out to my daughter who is soon to drive.

Bikes ride with traffic as they are under same traffic laws. Walk against traffic. My 2 cents.
That's the way it's always been since I was a kid. Cyclists ride with the traffic, pedestrians walk against the traffic. Cycling against the traffic creates huge problems and is, in fact, more dangerous (regardless of whether the cyclist likes to "see what's coming").
Cyclists can be dicks, but so can drivers in automobiles. Bike lanes help, but there need to be more of them. And there are some streets in N.O. that you just shouldn't be on with your bike.

fixed it.
i think some drivers just are annoyed with the fact they have to deal with cyclists at all. tough shite for them. i use my bike occasionally to get around, and i obey the law. cars should do the same. that's all.

This is why I sold my road bike. Too many dumbasses on the road think it's funny to do this kind of shite. They have no regard for the cyclists. I'd always try to get as far over as I could, but you can't leave the road on a road bike. So, I just ride my mountain bike on our hunting land, four wheeler trails and seldom used backroads. I know too many people that have been killed or maimed by a-hole drivers.

Everyday of my life I'm either training for or racing in triathlons. I've done the one in Nola 3 times. Not a single day goes by that I'm not fearful of this happening. It's a very sad day for several families.
People need to remember that no matter who's in the wrong , the stakes are always higher for the cyclist. Very much so. At the end of the day I'm somebody's father/husband/son etc. It's a life. It's a big deal.

I see I see. Does the city sweep that area? We've got a stretch of highway similar to that (Beeline Highway) where it's 8 feet for cyclists, rumble strip, half foot to the white line then roads for cars. The indian reservation sweeps it once every 2 months it seems (+ IMAZ). We get flats on it and there's sometimes huge pieces of random junk, but it feels relatively safe. I have seen some crazy stuff out there... Loveseat, hub caps, palm tree branch, refrigerator, metal pipes, 4x4's.
But when you see huge obstructions cyclists will look back and safely cross the rumble strip for a few seconds to overtake the obstacle. Or at least I do. Maybe look into whether the city is willing to do a sweep once in a while?
As for whoever posted riding in the sunrise + fog, I would never do that even with my lights

im afraid to ride my bike around my neighborhood because of this, much less chef hwy.
The way it should be. Roadways are no place for bicycles.

Any Lafayette cyclists here? We usually ride on Chemin Metairie ... never had any issues.

@forksup-- I did IMAZ two years ago. The beeline is very similar to the chef hwy in this accident.

You're probably right. Can I ask a question? Why do we want cyclists riding in the same direction as automobile traffic?
Think about driving diwn a two hwy behind another car and a bicyclist traveling toward you in your lane. You most likely will nit see the bicyclist until the car in front if you swerves over into the other lane to avoid the bike. If the driver suddenly dies this at the last minute, you do not have much time to make a quick decision to swerve into the other Kane which may occupy an oncoming car and the decision to slam on your brakes before hitting cyclist. Just common sense.

Nice, congratulations! It will probably end up being my 1st Ironman when I do one.
If Chef is the same as the Beeline, one of the parties was just outright grossly negligent then. Driver is either texting, drunk, blind, homicidal, or shouldn't be driving. Or cyclist wanted to play games with death, got a flat and went out of control, u-turned in the wrong place, or was texting (not very likely on a triathlon bike). Well, hope the other guy survives and everyone takes away some positive things away from the incident (pay attention, defensive riding/driving).

From what I'm hearing they were riding along in the lane (which is perfectly legal) and the guy simply ran over them from behind.

I was happy to see a large group of NOFD guys out at the Ironman event yesterday taking up a collection for this guy.

I did not see the release of a name of the driver. I read that the driver was with his 13 year old son when the accident happened. The last I heard was that no one was charged as of yet.
