Once again I went to Houston to buy a new vehicle vs north shore/BR dealers.

Car dealers in Louisiana can't hold a candle to car dealers in Houston. I flew over in 2006 and drove over last Friday (6/22) and bought new Hondas each time and saved $2,000 in '06 and $1,600 this time over the best deal offered by local dealers. The dealer lots (John Eagle / Katy Honda / etc.) are Huge. Due to their volume, dealers around here can't (or won't) compete. Check out Houston next time you're buying a new vehicle.

The biggest car dealership is a Toyota dealer in la. U work there u are virtually guaranteed to sell 40 cars a month by sitting there with ur thumb up ur arse.

Any new car dealer if u got good credit tell them exactly what u will do and they don't lose more than 1000 on the deal they will do it just don't go in there wasting anyone's time. New cars only and preferably the lAst day of the month

Last few cars I bought were out of Dallas, Atlanta, Jacksonville...Most were trades, but the most recent one wasn't. Just flew into Dallas on a cheap flight, salesman picked me up at the airport, and I drove the car home that evening. The major cities blow away local dealers.

Dealer picked me up at the Houston airport to buy a vehicle in 2006. Drove over this time because I wanted to trade in that vehicle. emailed a few pictures of trade in vehicle (after I negotiated a price on the new vehicle) and made the deal via e-mail. You're right, big city dealers blow away local dealers.

How much did you save factoring in flight/gas, expenses, including your time?

Yep

Here in DFW I have 5 Nissan dealers all within a 20 minute radius

I just play them against each other and you get a steal

They are all volume dealers and the manufacturers pay them volume bonuses for selling X cars per month so they will break even if they have to

My time is worth way more than flying somewhere to buy a car.

ETA you're basically saying that your time is worth less than $100 per hour in addition to the hastle of driving to Houston.

Unless u selling Lexus Mercedes or infinities new car dealers make money on volume and maintenance not markup. The most expensive. ,.ok nevermind the armada got bout four grand markup but most cars under 30k might have 1300 markup

Saving $1,600 to $2,000 for 8 hrs of my time is worth it to me. The dealers there even give you a full tank of gas which gets me home to Ponchatoula. When I flew over in'06, plane fare was $120. To and from costs are minimal.

They just mail the paper work to a LA local DMV and I pay the TTL locally. They give you a temp lic tag good for 60 days. It's very simple. DMV will call me when everything is ready.

One caution, front window tint must pass only 25% of light through in Tex. My tint passed 32%. In La, windows must pass 40%. Cost me $80 to change the front tint. This allows you to get an inspection sticker.

This is just my experience. Point I'm making is, you can save big bucks buying new cars in TX big cities vs locals who can't (or won't) compete.

Does Texas force you to register?

I bought a car in Alabama, drove it to Louisiana and paid tax, title, and license at a local auto title business.

Sorry, but I'm not wasting the day to drive 500 miles to save 1600...

Now 5000 on a new vehicle, I'd probably make the drive.

2000/1600 no way.. my time is more valuable.

I'm happy for you that you saved the money, but it's simple math. Everyone knows (or can figure out) how much they make per hour whether you're an hourly employee, a commissioned employee, a salaried employee or you own your own business. You are providing good information for anyone that it makes sense for. It's just not for me. Not that it matters but I approve of the thread.

I saved $200 over any price a Houston or Dallas dealer would give, right here in Baton Rouge - without flying or driving anywhere. I guess it pays to know how to talk to people in person and not be afraid.
