On what grounds can someone “officially rename” something?

Trump renamed Gulf of Mex, Working on Lake Ontario, and now AI.

Question is,

Is there any legal basis to rename something or a location? Do we all just say eff it and start calling it that? Not complaining just wondering how it even works. Thinking about all of the companies that have AI in their name and the thought of them having to change it because the president didn’t like the term.

I don't know. Why didn't you ask about Denali?

Not really a GMC guy. More of a Ford guy.

None.

You just have to a majority of people to accept and continue to call it whatever you want it named.

We can name anything we want. It doesn’t really matter though because in the end we’re all just matter and mass on a spinning rock destined for obscurity.

They are just executive orders. They are essentially just instructions to the government.

Not really official in any capacity to private individuals or companies.

The President can decree that all official documents coming out of the executive use a particular name.

He cannot force (directly) Google or Apple or other map providers to use the new name.

Nor can he force other countries to do so.

Ask anybody in Chicago (I don't mean the politicians, I mean the working joes) what the tallest building is, where the sox play, or what road runs down the lakefront.

Sears Tower
Comiskey
Lakeshore Drive

You can BS us all day about who the naming rights owner is, nobody is giving up the Sears Tower.

Who knows? Let's ask a homeless pedophile who takes joy rides with Latinx lesbians on the reg to obfuscate from handicapped people of color what it takes.

Around New Orleans, all it takes is for a street to be named after any Confederate Officer to be renamed after a black man.

For me, Robert E. Lee Blvd., Lee's Circle and Jefferson Davis Pkwy. will always be just that.
