PS on this day in 1974, Richard Nixon dropped a bomb of his own.

Yep and oh by the way:
-the U.S. military dropped leaflets telling people to get out of town. Or at least they did for Hiroshima
-you can make a reasonable argument that the Japanese committed worse acts than the Germans did but few care because they killed millions of Chinese.

Cloud cover mattered bc the photo unit wanted to have clear documentation of the bomb’s effects.

I think also the bombardier dropped it by using a sight, he needed to have a clear view of the city. Amazingly, they didn’t trust the newly invented guidance systems for such an important target.

The invasion of Japan would have been catastrophic. And those rabid fricks still waited for a second bomb to throw in the towel.

But Bockscar is always the forgotten B-29.

Enola Gay gets all the accolades.

Didn’t this bomb actually get dropped a few miles away from the actual location, and into a valley further from people? Probably would have killed another twenty five thousand in the “right” spot.

It's fascinating to me that so many peoples fates that day and at Hiroshima were so tied to the weather.

How many of us would not be here today, had those bombs not been dropped? My dad, my neighbor, and two of my dad's friends were all training for the invasion of Kyushu when the war ended.

Kokura was the intended target for the second bombing. Bad weather forced the crew the crew to drop the bomb on Nagasaki instead.

My grandfather was sent there after the bomb (not immediately). Died in his 40s from cancer all over his body.
