Had a high school teacher that would write "Dec. 7th, 1941" on the board to let us know we had a pop-quiz that day.
Still makes me laugh.

Sadly, it was really iced tea.

Go watch Animal House when you leave work today to understand the reference. Also, you'll laugh your arse off.

quote:french society is normally pretty appreciative of our efforts in defending and liberating their country in both world wars. They have many cemeteries and monuments dedicated to our service members and gave some of our soldiers the highest military honor in France
France is an ungrateful biotch to this day.
Most of their ungratefulness now comes from how they resent how we about the whole cold war which is whatever

Hitler gave FDR that opening when he stupidly declared war on the USA on 12/11 - which he did not have to do under the terms of the Tripartite Pact.
This decision, along with postponing the invasion of the Soviet Union to June, is what cost Hitler the war. Without these two decisions, the Nazis would probably have at least been able to secure a settled peace on favorable terms.

The USA saved their asses twice in a span of less than 30 years (with a lot of help from the Russians the second time). It's unreal how those ungrateful fricks feel about Americans.

That graphic is sobering. The Minié ball in the civil war tore some soldiers up
Posted on 12/7/18 at 10:47 am to TigerstuckinMS
To add to your graph.
The population of the US in 1850 was about 32 million, which means about 2% of the population died in the civil war.
The population of the US in 1940 was 132 million, which means about 0.3% died in WW2.

I was in Paris this summer. The amount of disdain and scorn they have for Americans is unreal. I had bouncers at a club tell me that I wouldn’t have a good time inside since I was American.
Eh that's Paris. They've been like that since, well, a long time. But go outside of Paris like Normandy and Brittany and Northern France and most people like Americans, Eastern France as well, they still have a soft spot for the the 442nd Infantry Battalion which was a bunch of Japanese Americans that fought like mutha frickers against the Germans in the Voseges Mountains

Yeah. Only 80 years between the two wars. 1861 to 1941. In those 80 years, we went from horses and muskets to B-29s and plutonium implosion devices

Learn your history. The Germans did a lot but this is not one of them. Try the Japanese.

Plutonium implosion devices never heard them referred to as this...
Atomic and nuclear ... Most commonly used..
BTW , THE TWO WEAPONS used during WwII were made of uranium (Hiroshima) and plutonium (nakasagi)..
But yea, Hugh difference in technologies...
Also not noted is the difference in advancement in medical science.. Infections and disease killed probably more then the actual wound inflicted on soldier...

To learn the efforts involved in winning WWII, I’m sad to say that I don’t think our citizens could do what it takes to win one like that again.

Makes me scared to think of where were going to go from 2018 to 2098

I know we are sort of trivializing 12/7/41, mainly because this affected none of us directly. I, too, am a big Animal House fan, so it is all humorous.
But, let's not forget the magnitude of the Pearl harbor bombing. Not only was it the single worst attack on America, still to this day, but it also had such drastic ramifications because it led to our entry into the Second World War.
