Not overwhelmed necessarily from Covid
We are seeing a major uptick in people coming in that skipped out on medical care for 3 months
So I think the whole strategy to flatten the curve didn’t really help because everything else built up anyway,
And to be clear, hospitals get very full quite often, same thing happened during the flu epidemic, we always run 95%+ capacity and when you have a community outbreak it stresses the system

Hospitalizations in LA are less than half of what they were at the April peak. But they’re so overwhelmed now...

OLOL ——a few years ago they lost my mother for 2 hours after she was admitted.

They are looking for Fed money to bail them out. The hospital in Zachary wants to have a millage proposal on the ballot to help them or they may be forced to shut down. Oh and by the way, as of yesterday they had 1 covid patient.

The lakes Covid unit isn’t the same size as it was before. The hospitals are full of just every day run of the mill sick people

I can tell you about LC — brother works there and he said they had 40 or so covid pts. Admit 6/7 per day and d/c 5/6 per day.
He’s clinical so he knows the numbers — he said staffing is the issue not the beds.

If you need a bed there is indeed a bed for you — you could be in a different region but if you need it who cares? We have nursing home patients three hours from us as they needed other types of care (namely vent) but they have a bed. Samenwith this — if you need, there is one.

I’m pretty sure I heard JBE say yesterday that we were hovering around 50-60 new hospitalizations per day statewide. Is that really too much for Louisiana to handle?

And they magically never mention patients getting discharged. It’s not as if people go into the hospital and don’t come out. And what is the normal number of patients going into the hospital? 50 to 60 sounds like a lot. But what is the normal number during a flu season? So much we aren’t being told that allows them to manipulate the information.

It shouldn’t be — look at the chart posted on the I think previous page. There are beds — you might not get one where you want to be but if you need a bed there is a bed.

• Hospitals are using 62.7% of overall capacity.
• The number of beds available is 5,518.
• 1,599 Hospital ventilators were available.
• 1,244 portable ventilators (EPV) were available.
Our Lady of the Lake has 221 beds available and 19 critical care beds avail as of yesterday

Same situation here but expect it's multifactorial.
1st time around we shut down for the wave that never came. The hospitals took a huge loss on lack of surgeries and also admissions.
However, we didn't have the contingency plans and surge plan that we have in place now. Additionally I think there are less people requiring vents than the 1st wave. Whether that's because better knowledge or management or weaker strain, dunno.
So at one point, we were shut down with around 40-50 people admitted amongst 3 hoapitals on the 1st wave. Now we are around 100 or so admitted and nothing has changed on the elective side.
I'd imagine they'll start rationing once they start to reach their overflow/surge plan beds capacity.

They are overwhelmed by medicare and medicaid patients. Hospitals get pennies for these patients. So, they are in fact, not overwhelmed.

The prior ban on elective surgeries is why they are overwhelmed now. Those folks showed up in droves recently putting great strain on the system.

lol they have several icus with closed beds. Doing that to say they are full.
