Hospitals want off site Covid centers to move all Covid patients to. That way they keep doing surgeries and essentially outsource Covid to another facility and do t have to deal with it.

In Lake Charles the news made it a big deal starting one hospital here had exceeded their ICU COVID capacity.
What they failed to mention is that capacity was only 16 and they had 19 in an ICU unit they made just for COVID.
The main ICU was still functioning like normal but they had to make the headlines scary because "exceeding capacity" is more scary than saying 19 people out of an area with a few hundred thousand people.

It is about to impact elective surgery and by elective meaning scheduled not emergency. So anything from cancer to open heart to fake tiddies is elective.
They are not overwhelmed but the rise is alarming.
BTW, seems that Houston is over the hump and we now know that TMC the biggest in the world has LOTS of room and flexibility. Houston was never going to be overwhelmed.

Correct. The CEO of Houston Methodist pretty much scoffed at the notion that Houston hospitals were “overwhelmed” during multiple press conferences. Yet, my local news is still in panic mode 24/7

In this 3 page thread, only 2 people have pointed to the REAL issue.....STAFFING the hospital, NOT finding empty hospital beds. Think of it like going to your favorite restaurant at a really busy time. After waiting in line for 30 min, you finally get in. As you're walking to your table, you see a number of empty tables. Why did you have to stand in line when they have empty tables? Because they didn't have adequate staff, e.g waiters, waitresses and cooks. Similar thing w/ hospitals. ALL hospitals have staffing guidelines that require the nursing uint to have a certain number of nurses for each patient. If a patient care area/unit is "full", they'll have to call in more nurses to open a nursing unit (or free up more beds if the unit's already open) in order to take care of more patients. The hospital doesn't want to do call in an agency nurse (that's very expensive to the hospital) just to open up a few more beds and they may not be able to coax any of their part time/pool/prn nurses to come in. Every hospital has it's "sweet spot" where the number of patients in the hospital match up well w/ that hospitals staffing capability. Even before Covid, it was not unheard of for a hospital to decline transfers from outlying hospitals, not because they're actually "full" and no beds in the hospital are available, but because they have to find extra nursing staff (sometimes they don't want to take the risk or do the extra work to find the extra staff). And in an areas like BR, a number of hospitals are calling the same nurses to pull some extra shifts.

Also...when states report how many beds are available....it doesn't consider how many beds are available that can actually be staffed by nurses, etc.
It is only giving how many physical/licensed beds are available.

There has been an increasing number of hospital staff testing positive. I would assume they can't work until they test negative.

Don’t know about the validity of the claims, but we’ve got a family friend who is in one of the COVID units over there (as a patient). Weird thing is that he was a denier re Covid all along—no mask, no social distancing. That shite jumped up and got him though. He was in critical care for several days but seems to be improving more recently. Hopefully he survives. But, yeah, I could see how having just a few patients like that could max out a hospital’s resources.
