Wasn't offered in schools around me. Had to take it at a privately owned driving school

What do you mean? You have to pay? It was included in our high school in MS.
I remember doing errands and getting McDonald's.

People shouldn't go around driver's ed. Hell drivers ed should be more intensive and getting a license should be much harder.
It is insane how stupid the driving test was (four right turns, a left and an angle park
)
Upset at a series of classes for $400? Hell there are things that need to be taught about driving. Anyone can figure out the vehicle's controls, learning the laws, the signage and the rights of way, needs to be instilled.

I got my license mid 2000's. Don't remember driving school costing money. I also went to a really hard up private school so I'm sure they would have if it was nescessary.

Martini gets my vote for post of the month. Laughing so hard it started a coughing fit.

Just for the benefit of some of these old timers (like me) who don't have any driving age kids:
Nowadays, the Louisiana schools don't have driver's ed anymore. You have to pay to go to a driving academy and get a certificate to get your DL.
If you don't play ball, you have to wait a few extra years before they let you take the exam without taking the private class.
It ain't free no mo'! And yes, it's a shameful racket under the guise of safety. I blame lobbyists.

In 1973 it was, learners at 14, drive at 15. It's a wonder we didn't all kill ourselves

In the great state of MS you get your permit for like 6mo then take your driver's exam with the obese lady. The cost of both of these is so nominal I don't remember what they were.
This might be why Mississippi is the most dangerous state to drive in. I've worked in almost every state in America and MS has by far the worst drivers in America.

Back in the 90's I took this as a freshman in high school, turned 15 and got my license. I'm not surprised politicians found a way to make off of it.

Should be mandatory. Too many fricks given a vehicle without proper instruction.
I think they should make it harder to get licenses.
It's the same as letting your kid go hunt without proper gun safety. You wouldn't just send them out their with a loaded weapon.

I took mine between my Fr and Sophomore year. Coach Tattoo Dupre taught us. It was offered through the public school I attended but it wasn't free, didn't cost $400 either, probably closer to $40. We had to go from 9-11 for 2 days, then we drove for 4 hours for 2 days. This would have been about 92-93.

State could be taken down on RICO charges if the FBI would get off their asses.

Took mine during the summer between so. and junior year. My basketball coach was the teacher and I think the school charged like $80 bucks per kid. I got some kind of school credit too. The funniest thing about it is that all of the people in the running for valedictorian took it and then realized it was going to mess with their weighted GPAs so they went through some kind of process to not have the class count.

I took it for free with my football coach, in 1999.

That $400 drivers ed class is the least of your expenses for having a teenage driver. Talked to your insurance agent yet?
Holy frick isn't that the truth.

No driver's ed required in TN. You just go in and take a test. Then you pass and get to drive your car into other people's cars.

My son just took the driving class it was $400. The driving school now gives the written test and the driving test and you take the results to the dmv to get the license. I am not 100% but I think I have to pay another $100 for the driving test.

When my middle son was old enough to drive, my auto insurance agent told me that he should have driver's education to reduce his premium. Who better to teach him how to drive then me! That's how I learned; from my dad. So after the driving lessons from dad, I went online, created a certificate of satisfaction for driver's education, listed the education establishment as me, signed my name, dated it, gave it to the insurance agent, and got the drivers ed discount!

Whatever happened to parents teaching their kids to drive? By the time I was 15 i was a driving fool. During school driver's ed all I did was drive our coach to his mistresses apartment and sat in the car while he did his thing.
