at least check trip advisor or booking.com reviews. Cheap travelers are honest and there are some gems out there.
Some of these are being renovated as boutique motels and I love that idea instead of being crack dens.

I recently stayed at a place just like that off I-55 in BFE Missouri. The place had just been completely remodeled, the front desk clerk told me I was the first one to ever stay in the completely redone room. Wasn't bad at all.

Last hotel I stayed in like that was in Port Arthur TX. When I got to the top of the stairs to go into my room. 5 cops were getting ready to kick the door in 3 rooms down.

Split it 50/50 with my side piece and it’s only $20 for a few hours of fun!

I’d rather sleep in my truck at a truck stop than one of those bed bugged roach motels
And I bet the showers and bathrooms are cleaner at a truck stop than that motel has

Motor inn
It was for a 1 night stay on a road trip nothing fancy just a place to shite shower and shave.
Or a place to bang whores that aren't worth fhe money of an actual hotel

One big driver in the change to entry through the lobby was guest safety.

On roadtrips as a kid, your hotel/motel choice was usually made by looking at billboards along the road. No one made reservations. We’d arrive after dark and be gone in the morning. If the place was a Howard-Johnson’s, their restaurants had the greatest kids’ menu ever.
When you’d arrive at the final destination, you’d know it because we’d have reservations and the hotel would have an elevator.
One good thing about motels like the one in your pic became apparent when I had a job with a lot of travel. All it would take is 1 female on the team to say she wouldn’t feel safe with outside doors and the company would book us in a much nicer hotel that was usually outside the normal budget.

Thanks to all you criminals, motels have to have interior hallways now.

This was considered an attractive and popular hotel idea in the past?
Yes, just as this...
...was considered an attractive and popular entertainment center at one point.
Motels have been around since the 1920s-1930s. In the boom years of the 50s and 60s, motels hit their pinnacle of popularity as the explosive growth of the middle class allowed more people to casually travel than ever before. The big amenities of the time were TVs, A/C and pools (the really nice ones might even have color TV).
As time went on and it began to cost less and less to travel, more and more people travelled. With more people travelling, the demand increased for nicer places with more amenities.

Does anyone here still pick these places?
Yes, but the type of people staying there (and how long they stay) heavily depends on how well the place has been kept up as well as the safety of the surrounding neighborhood.

You’ve heard of form over function? Well this was the opposite. I think Holiday Inn may have been the first “fancy” hotel I remember as a kid.

so people use them as a cheap longer stay option that was never really intended.
Some people simply live in them.
