If it runs you can sell it on Craigslist. List it for $800, accept $600

Volunteers of America runs TV ads saying they'll come pick up vehicles and you get a tax deduction for donating it.
NRA runs radio ads saying the same thing...benefits a "back the blue" program.

They changed the tax rule on donating vehicles last year. You used to be able to deduct the fair market value (which would be a good deal here) but now you have to wait until they sell the vehicle and you only get the actual sales value off.
Which is really killing organizations that donate the vehicle to needy single moms because if they don't "sell" it then you get zero.

Sell it on craigslist. Not joking.

Buy a ski mask and do a smash and grab at a jewelry store

Now you're thinking - but don't do any repairs yet. The car only gets you the first taste - if it's good stuff, you then have the repairs to negotiate with.

If rear wheel drive, power brake it until both rear tires pop. Then donate it to your charity of choice

Do you have a kid in the family that needs a car? When I was 16 any old beater would have been a diamond. If so, you can give it to him/her and do the repairs that are needed to get an inspection sticker.

Is it a good idea to sell a car (for $500 or something) that can't pass an inspection?

I had the same issue with a 20 year old Dodge truck. I sold it very cheap to a guy who just got out of jail and needed a ride to his new job driving a dump truck. Nice guy. I hope he didnt go back in.

Some illegal Latino will buy it if you put it up for sale but my advice is to fix those minor problems and hold on to it, it never hurts to have an extra vehicle around.

Sell it in Alabama, no inspection
