Nowadays when you think of the name of an elderly woman you think of names like Agnes, Gladys, Edna
And probably years ago, others may have thought those names were out of place too and it would be weird to have a grandma named Agnes, Gladys, or Edna.

I like the Romans and the Samurai ideas about names. You start off with names your family provided by default (place of birth, order of birth among siblings, recycle a family name), but you grow your name around your own accomplishments.
I'm cool with that. Bring back the courtesy name. The "stage name" is the closest we have in modern times. If Bob Smith wants to be D'Kwanxaa let them decide when they're older.

Imagine sitting on grandpa Braxtynns lap listening to stories about his nasty curveball back in his travel ball days

Can't wait until I hit the nursing home and do the same stuff I do these days.
My great grandson comes to visit and I tell him to pick up the sticks and get smashed in Madden while Metallica and Tool blasts in the background.
Hell I may turn that nursing home room into a full on dorm room complete with a blacklight and SI Swimsuit Edition posters.

As a kid I played football with a boy name Henry. It weirded me out because I always though of Henry as an old man's name.

That first name has been around since the civil war, but most commonly spelled Jackson.
Yeah. But, these dipshit parents try to be creative and unique, only to force their kid to spell their name and feel like a douchebag every time they meet someone for the rest of their life.

Glad this is bugging other people too. It’s been keeping me up at night.

Are we sure that these folks will make it to that age?

Love these names. You can filter out the trash upon introduction without actually having to have a second of conversation.

Forget grandma first names being fricked. The actual names for grandmas are already fricked. No one is satisfied being MawMaw or Grandma. It's Honey, Sweetie, Gigi, Mimi, YaYa ... my son has nixed my fabulous idea of being Sugah Puddin or Nana Puddin (which I offered facetiously). I hope someday to be Grandma.

I didn’t know until my father’s funeral that my grandfather’s name was Admiral. I always thought it was Dewey. When I read my dad’s obituary, I saw Admiral Dewey Potter. I was like damn, I didn’t know grandpa Dewey was an admiral. My aunt said no, that was his name.
Your grandfather was obviously named for this great American hero:
Admiral George Dewey (December 26, 1837 – January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in United States history to have attained the rank. He participated in the capture of New Orleans and the Siege of Port Hudson, helping the Union take control of the Mississippi River. By the end of the war, Dewey reached the rank of lieutenant commander. He is, however, best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side.

I agree you with you completely, except on that last one. "YaYa" (also spelled YiaYia) is an ethnic Greek term for a female grandparent (male is pappou or pappous).

If they were Greek, then that would be meaningful. It's more like YaYa Sisterhood stuff.
Also, I don't really hate those other ones, it’s just a minor annoyance.

People today name kids like they're naming a puppy, kitten, or stuffed animal.
