Old friend is in jail. Wants my contact info to call/write me, should I?

This guy was a close high school friend and we roomed together in college the first 2 years. We went our seperate wats because he smoked too much (currently the reason he is in jail). His brother recently reached out to me because the old friend wants to write/call me. I told his brother I'm moving soon so my address is changing (true). His brother then asked for my number. Is it fricked up if I ignore?

I'd just tell the brother why you're not interested. And I see nothing wrong with your opinion on not being open to talking to the guy.

What harm can this do? Hear the man out.
Maybe he has $100,000 buried somewhere and he needs you to dig it up for a cut.

He may want you to write a character support letter.

If you want to remain friends or reconnect with him do it. If not don't. He probably just wants someone to talk with and maybe try to get commissary money from
ETA: I wouldn't remain friends unless he was a really great friend

In letter #3 he will be asking you to smuggle him drugs in your anus.

I was called from jail once, call cost me $10.
That is some pure bullshite. I bet that is a huge kickback as well. $10 collect calls in the day and age of $20 monthly unlimited long distance?

Calls from jail are collect and pretty damn expensive (routed through a third party provider), they are also recorded. So I would take a letter over phone calls any day.
ETA. The person who said he wants a letter or something is probably right. That or he is doing 12 step and wants to make amends for something. Like that time you were passed out and woke up with a sore arse. That was him.

Do you have it in you to cut the friendship off if the guy tries to guilt you into paying his bail/bills/let him live with you while he "gets his life together" but ends up doing the same thing(s) that put him in jail in the first place?

Dude probably wants a friend. Just hear what he has to say. You can always not respond to his letter.
But a word to the wise, considering your hesitation already, keep an arms length with him b/c maybe after he's out, he'll think he's going to be your roomie once again and that can't happen.

I quit being friends with him because he didn't care about the illegal risks he took when he was around me. Dont really want him or what he brings to the table near my life.

He will ask for money or a car by letter 3.
