First, a teller asked McCowns for two pieces of identification, and he handed over his license and Social Security card. He then complied with being fingerprinted, which is standard for nonbank customers trying to cash checks, according to Huntington.

It is a rhetorical fallacy to take one incident and assume it represents the norm

This is not the norm.

Now use the same line of reasoning on this site to show that one cold snap does not disprove global warming.

Maybe, but imagine going to cash a legit check and getting arrested. That's insane.

To act like you shouldn't get called out for this is way off. I watched the video and I realize the place had been getting fraudulent checks, but calling the cops on this guy just because his employer didn't pick up the phone is a step too far.

There’s a little more to the story-
quote:

Multiple tellers then debated whether the check was legitimate, and after failing to reach his employer, they handed McCowns back his check, for roughly $1,000.

Did they overreact? Probably. I’d assume though that it is SOP to notify the authorities when they suspect someone of trying to cash a forged check.

Did the cops need to handcuff him? I’d say probably not, but the article is very light on details. The cops could just be assholes, or he could’ve been irate, because the bank refused to cash his check, and could’ve given the cops a reason to cuff him.

As in all such cases, I’ll wait until all of the evidence is presented before making my decision as to who was in the wrong and how wrong they were.
