There were 3 of them.
That changes things. Being 3AM, it was probably dark, so it’s completely possible that he felt his life in imminent danger with 3 strangers in his yard.

Let's see what happens to the defenders if the cop is black and the kid is white.

Id guess by the cop and neighborhood they are both black.
However the cop testing positive for meth makes me think white.

Whatever happens, one thing is sure, the cop's life is going to be much more stressful and complicated now that he went outside and shot the kid (even if the kid shouldn't have been around there at that hour).

Don’t disagree with that at all

Just to reiterate:
quote:
Investigators say William Daniel Short admitted to shooting the 14-year-old shortly after 3 a.m. after hearing an alarm outside his home. Short told deputies he armed himself and confronted three teens, ordering them to stop. He said that two teens immediately ran away, but he saw an object in the 14-year-old's hand that lit up.
Short said he believed the light was a muzzle flash from a gun and fired a single shot, striking the 14-year-old in the head. When he approached the teen, he discovered that the object was actually a cell phone that was lighting up with a bright light.
quote:
The teens said they had stopped to return home, and in order to not get caught, decided to park the car a short distance away from their house near Short's home. Two teens left, but three stayed inside, before ultimately getting out themselves and triggering the car's alarm. The remaining three teens then started walking away when they were confronted by Short.
LINK
So no, he didn’t feel like he was about to get mobbed by 14 year olds because two of the three were running away.

Also to reiterate, some of the smoking hot takes in this thread:
A 14 year old kid snuck out of his house with his friends and got shot in the fricking head because his cell phone light went off, by a cop who got fired from his last job for doing meth, and the “play stupid games crowd” is calling the guy a hero.
If it comes out that the kid was breaking into the car or reasonably threatening the officer, I’ll be the first to eat my words. All of the evidence available right now points against that, yet folks are still trying to downplay it as self-defense. All of the people celebrating or ignoring the fact that this kid’s parents might have to bury their 14 year old son make me fricking sick.
ETA: And while I’m sure the cop sincerely regrets his actions and will have to live with them the rest of his life, you don’t get a mulligan once you pull the trigger. Everyone who has ever fired a gun knows this. You don’t put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot and if you’re wrong, you better be prepared to suffer the consequences.

If the parents, nor the legal system will deal with an arse clown, then the guy who is being robbed should deal with it. I have zero issue with this.

Yeah some real knuckle dragging brainwashed incels tend to occupy this board. The responses are always predictable in threads like these, yet always entertaining to read aloud and imagine that someone really thinks like this, and what they might look like based on their username.

Sucks for the kid. Can’t hang out with friends at school, and his parents probably said no to hanging out because of the quarantine. 14-year-old me probably would have also waited until my parents fell asleep to sneak out to hang out with friends.

I wish idiots would stop saying this when an incident like this happens.
"Death sentence" is a legal term and is handed down by a jury after a trial.
When an a-hole breaks the law and karma comes at the end of a gun, THAT is generally an expected outcome for engaging in stupid behavior.
Muh "not a death sentence" is a stupid retort when Darwinism rears its head.
