You’re getting downvoted but you’re not wrong when it comes to this aspect. Coaches already live by analytics and that’s all AI would do.

But coaches do a lot of other things besides Xs and Os that won’t be replaced by a computer. But yeah AI will absolutely influence play calls etc. why wouldn’t it? Coach could have veto power just like he does now with analytics.

Wanna know why?

Ask AI to put together a 2026 1st round Mock draft for you.

That's why.

Coaches have already done that. The “analytics” said to go for it etc.

because athletes are human and there is a human element to motivation.

Some small school who can’t afford $10M should give this a shot. Still need a staff of humans to carry these decisions out though.

What are the odds Indiana and Cignetti are already doing this but just have Cig and staff carry out the decisions? Might could explain the sudden ascension.

We saw clearly throughout the playoffs how data and analytics are tools, not the end all answer.

I do think AI should replace officiating for sports, especially football referees

This would end quick after 126 holding penalties game 1

Let’s bring in AI players as well. No human element at all. That would be amazing…

Right?

The emotional part is what separates the great coach from a good coach

Why pay a coach $12 million a year when AI can do more efficient lineups, advanced metrics, all of the bullshite that humans fail at because of emotion or stubborness?

Xs and Os seem right for disruption. AI would be able to tell you when to call a timeout, when to go for two, all of that much faster and unbiased.

Yeah, there's the human motivation element but the stupid AI could even be trained to talk to the players how they respond best as a team and individually.
People who have never coached football before think that coaches focus on the paper parts of coaching: lineups, metrics, plays, and playcalling.

The paper part of being a coach is not the difficult part of being a coach. Anyone can draw up a play or manipulate a lineup. It's certainly not the most important part of being a successful coach.

The most important part of being a coach is actually coaching.

Taking the Xs and Os from the paper and teaching the skills and techniques to the players to execute what is written on the play sheet. Watching the attempts at execution, noticing the big and subtle errors in execution, and correcting those errors. Getting the players in a position group to work together, then combining those groups into a cohesive unit.

AI has not been shown to be particularly adept at teaching fundamental/universal concepts like Algebra to students. It will likely take considerable time and effort before it will be able to interact with athletes on a field to teach skills and techniques or to implement a particular offense or defense.

Coaching is one of the worst use cases. Coaching requires alot of decision making based on much more emotion and subjectivity than objectivity.

At start, the analyst roles on staff should dry up fast.

Game planning can be reduced to seconds.

In game adjustments and predictive play calling will be disruptive.

The replay booth should die a quick death.

The ESPN talking heads should look considerably different in a few years.

The NFL draft process too.

The only thing that will remain unchanged are the gold diggers and multiple baby mamas and child support.

MLB can't rig the games if a computer corrected calls balls and strikes.

Then it’s just the same AI program playing offense and defense vs itself.

AI will be banned from all leagues, imo.
