re: Obesity rates in the US have tripled in just one generation

This obesity epidemic simply can’t be true. At work and on the television, I’m constantly seeing ads for charities fighting “childhood food insecurities” and I’m told that “11 out of 10 children in the US go to bed hungry.” I guess those charities are kicking hunger’s arse.

I think that's part of it. But I also think there are environmental toxins involved. PFOA's are one suspect. They are known endocrine disruptors (frick with metabolism) and are found in almost every product nowadays.
PFA's have been in use for 80 years or so, so I'm skeptical that they alone are the culprit.

He'll, we have people who have everything delived to them now. You hardly have to leave your house if you choose. Convenience and comfort leads to obesity.
The US government created the food pyramid to fatten up the population. A fat and lazy population, is a controllable population

People want to blame food ingredients and play the victim but it is a huge increase in sedentary lifestyles that has lead to this.
How do you explain construction sites, other physical labor jobs, and kids then? Go to any construction site and 2/3rds of the workers are going to be overweight, the same amount as office workers. Fat kids play sports and have PE in school. Not moving plays a part, but it's not near the catalyst of our obesity epidemic.

Public policy makers that feed our kids and give subsidies to farmers.
You just can't help yourself from bad takes in this thread I guess.

Don’t you think times are different now? You do know that there was a time when technology wasn’t at everyone’s fingertips. Most people didn’t have computers, iPhones, or the internet back then.
No one follows it now but back then it was pumped into public school classrooms and plastered on tv’s across America. I don’t know how old you are but I clearly remember it being a huge emphasis.

The US government created the food pyramid in 1992. Coincidence that obesity rates skyrocketed since then? I think not
The only part of the food pyramid that people “follow” is that we eat more starchy carbs.
We, however, don’t eat less fat, less sugar, or less calories, all things that the food pyramid recommends.
Basically we simply eat more of everything.
Blaming the food pyramid is silly.

I can’t believe this post got a single downvote. HFCS, seed oils, heavily processed carbs are killing us.

Multiple things can be true at once. Ive said the food pyramid wasn’t the only factor but it was a factor, along with a multitude of other reasons. Saying “basically we simply eat more of everything” may be true too but it’s not the only factor

Everyone commenting ITT should be forced to post a selfie.

any given job site is full of fat fricks. It’s 100% diet.
Now that you mention it a significant portion of our guys in the field are overweight as well

There is no evidence that it is or was a factor though.
We didn’t listen or adhere to the food pyramid. Ever.

People have zero concept of what is or isn’t “overweight” anymore.
Half of these posts turn into “BMI isn’t applicable to me because it doesn’t apply well to NFL running backs” and statements of “I would look like a survivor of Auschwitz if I was a healthy BMI”.

I think a huge part of it is the cost of living increasing requiring dual working spouses
A lot easier to cook at home with fresh unprocessed ingredients when you are home all day

And people are shocked that younger people are "suddenly dying" from heart attacks. Nothing to see here folks.

This. Women are to blame. Sorry but a 150lb, 5'6 female isn't cute, or healthy, or curvy, or thicc, that's fat. Call it what it is.

Would love to see the same analysis for European and Asian countries. Looks very different (with my own eyes).
Obesity is lethal. You don't see many obese 80 year olds.
Lifestyle change needed
