My dad work for NASA at the Stennis Space Center on the MS coast during the Apollo missions. I was 5 when he took me to watch NASA test fire an Appolo rocket engine. The fire, smoke, and ground shaking like an earthquake was awesome. Not long after that Hurricane Camille hit. It was an interesting summer.

I remember the launches since the Mercury days. Every launch was televised on all channels. Mom would wake us early sometimes before school to watch a 6am CT launch. When launches were later in the mornings, we would watch on tv at school. It was always a big deal.

I had recently turned nine years old. I remember how big a deal it was for the whole country.
The pictures and video coming back from the moon were pretty grainy though.??

I was 5 years old, living in Tampa. Could see the rocket launches once they cleared the treetops, the smoke trail, the sun reflecting off the shiny rockets. Walter Cronkite on the B&W TV narrating and live commentary.
That may have been my NASA birthday party year. Had a spacesuit and helmet with gold mirrored visor and everything! Red, white, and blue icing on the cake even.
Like NO during Feb. and Mardi Gras everywhere you go, that was Central FL from the mid 60's to the mid 70's but with NASA theme all year round.

Yes I was alive.
I was home on leave from the service.
I would watch on tv and go outside and look a the full moon trying to take it all in as to what was really happening.
Awesome times. US was definitely winning the space race.Too bad Obama fricked that all up.

I was 4 for the first moon landing, and I don't remember watching it. I do remember a few of the later Apollo launches. I had a bunch of Apollo and Skylab swag as a kid, though. Wish I still had it.

Shucks I remember mercury and Gemini missions too. I actually got to aee a mercury rocket when it passed across the state. It stopped in Opelousas and Daddy brought me to see it. Hard to believe but it was on a trailer pulled by an 18 wheeler.

I was 10 and yes we all were glued to the tv. Spacecwas a big deal back then, especially outdoing the Russians. Also that summer was hurricane Camille. Another big deal.

It was 1969. Baton Rouge had channels 2 and 9. We all gathered around the old black and white to watch it. It was a big deal.
For those who care, channel 33 came online in 1971 and 27 was in 1975.

Sure, I was 11 and it was a huge deal. I can still picture where everyone was and what the living room looked like, and my 3 foot tall model Saturn V that would break down into the sections.
Same when the Chiefs won Superbowl IV 6 months later.
We moved quite a bit, there are several living rooms after that that I can hardly remember at all. But those two events are etched in the brain.

This thread has delivered... thank you to all who've posted your memories and have kept it surprisingly civil

I was almost 9 at the time. It was a big thing and TV gave it a bunch of coverage, primitive as it was compared to today. The entire country followed it. Unfortunately it was at the same time as the Viet Nam war so the coverage was split with war coverage.

I was alive for Apollo 11. I do recall watching television coverage of the Apollo program, but I cannot definitely say I was watching the Apollo 11 landing. It is right at the edge of what could be an early memory.

I remember seeing a lot of that stuff at Huntville, AL space center. My dad bought me a super 8 movie about the apollo 11 program.
Probably still have it.

I was 7 and my birthday is July 20th. It was really a great time to be alive. I think every kid on the block wanted to be an astronaut at that time.
