To legalize sports-betting, and recreational marijuana. The state has to find additional tax revenue sources to make up for the financial shortfall.

Makes too much sense. We would all stay at home and do little and drink more.

I agree. I keep watching all these sporting events on TV lately and wishing I could bet on them.

They need to sell us to Texas, except that Texas is going to feel this pain too. There really isn't a solution to the state budget unless they think creatively like what you're saying. Don't hold your breath.

They can't. Those kinds of bills dealing with fiscal matters can only be brought to the floor in odd numbered years due to our fricked up state constitution.

Louisiana: Where "Operation Footbullet" is a way of life.

Are fiscal matters allowed to be discussed in a special session?

It makes far too much sense.

If it’s on the table and anyone opposes it they should be publicly shamed. The only reason it wouldn’t is if these assholes load the legislation with a bunch of other crap.

Removed since others have noted that the state will not make any revenue on sports betting right now.

It took a lot just to get video poker in Louisiana. And then to finally approve casinos. Now that it is actually legal to gamble in Louisiana, our brilliant legislators are leaving a shite ton of money on the table by not allowing sports betting. I don't get it. Gambling is gambling, what do they care what kind of gambling it is?

Same here, but I keep losing. I figured by law of average Clemson will have to best LSU on one of these replays.

why is the state being in the throes of a fake pandemic the time to lose all morals and dignity?

Yep, if the special session is specifically called for that purpose. A special session can't be called to just talk about whatever they want. It must be limited in time and the purpose for the session must be specified in the proclamation calling the session and only matters pertaining to the purpose of the session may be discussed.

How specific the purpose must be is beyond the limits of my understanding, like most things are.

No. SPECIAL.

ETA: Actually, I think in Louisiana, they're called "extraordinary". That's even better than special.

The governor could also call an emergency session without notice or proclamation. Epidemic is specifically enumerated in the constitution as a reason to call an emergency session. I just looked it up.
