re: Notice on my Door from the DoD Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency

I had a Top Secret clearance for many years. When it was being renewed, they would just show up in my neighborhood and go to neighbors houses to ask questions. I once told my neighbor "you may have someone come talk to you. My security clearance is up for renewal." He said "youre a little late. They were here last week."

Normally the person they are doing the check on would have told you they were using you as a reference. But this seems odd.
Not always. Sometimes they will show up to people that they know a person has had a continued past association with.
It’s just a few basic questions.

About 30 years ago I was coaching a PE class, we were out on the football field stretching. Four guys in black suits turn the corner and start walking towards us. It's a long walk, I'm thinking, Oh shite! What have I done? They finally get to me and asked me if I knew ________. They asked a few more questions then left. They were doing a background check on a kid who applied for the secret service.

Yeah I had to do a background check for my good friend when he was in Army Ranger school

Probably want to ask you about another poster here.

Honest question because I have no idea…why wouldn’t the DoD mail it? Or at least request a meeting by mail?
The people who mentioned this seemed to get a bunch of downvotes so I’m assuming there’s an obvious reason that I’m missing here. Personally, I see something like that on my door I’d assume it was a scam because I’m inundated with bullshite all the time.

Happened to me a few years ago. They were asking questions about my neighbor who was getting promoted to a senior position at Lockheed Martin that would've given her access to sensitive materials. Not a big deal.

I sit on a local board. We got a couple letters like that with agents trying to verify employment of former employees.

This is normal. Process is broad and branches depending on associates listed and locations lived. Talking to agent will help to hasten the process for the applicant.

That's how they do it. I've been through the process. The higher the clearance, the deeper the dig.

They don't want to gove you time to consult with the subject of the check or to concoct some elaborate story.

Yes, I’ve been interviewed before about a friend who was going into the Secret Service

Anyone going through security clearance would know they listed you as a reference, and unless a moron, would have told you to expect to be contacted.
I am unsure if they ever go to known associates that weren’t listed as references to see what they can find out. Maybe for top secret clearance.

I was a summer only employee of the CIA when I was in college. Only kids of employees could apply. My little town in Ohio freaked out when the black suits came asking about me.

It's not just references. The owner of the local gas station was asked about me. He knew me well but he was not a reference.

That is laughable now.
DCSA agents do not have time to ask the local gas station cerk about a potential TS/SCI applicant.
You put references down on the SF-86, and that is who they contact. They may research your previous workplaces and educational institutions, but that is it.

When being considered for a “sensitive” position in the Federal government (or, as a contractor) - especially with DoD, DoE, or DoS - you find out what your friends really think of you.
I remember my initial interview with the Defense Investigative Service to get clearance to work on a DoD project. I was in my early 20s and my folks, working in the energy business, were living abroad.
Old boy asked me about 16 different ways why my parents were living in Country X (which the US wasn’t super friendly with)…I finally just had to say “because that’s where [big oil company] said the next paycheck would be.” That satisfied him.
But yeah - all my buddies got visits.
