I got home from work today and found a notice stuck on my front door from the Dept of Defense Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency. The note stated is necessary that I call them back about the fitness and suitability of person they are considering for a "position of National Security or Public Trust with the US Governemnt." Today's date as well as the name and phone number of an agent to contact was given. There was also information on how to verify the agent's identity.

Never heard of something like this. Really strange.
Is this legitimate or a scam? If this is legitimate, should I even contact them?

Yes, some government agencies will talk to families and friends when doing security and background checks on applicants.

They're in the bidness of finding people. If it is that important they will find you.

Just tell them Lester Earl can get the job done. Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Normally the person they are doing the check on would have told you they were using you as a reference.
But this seems odd.

They're checking someone's security clearance. They did this to some of my friends and family. You pretty much have to list everyone you know when filling one out.

Nope; not how it works.

They interview far and wide for intel applicants.

This. Also possible the notice was for someone like an old neighbor that moved out and the agent wanted to check with previous neighbors nearby.

Unless you know a friend/family member who used you as a reference, they're likely doing a background investigation on one of your neighbors.

But this seems odd.

Also don't they normally mail you the request, not just come stick it ion your door?

When I was having my background check done to be a contractor at CDC some dozen years ago they mailed documentation forms to my references.

Mailing it would seem much more official. This was a folded up piece of paper wedged in my door

Legitimate. Your neighbor probably is going through a security clearance process.

Someone is going through a background check and they need to interview everyone. Standard.

It's a neighbor under a clearance background check. No need to freak out.

Yeah DCSA processes secret clearances. Normal procedure.

If you are so intrigued or curious just call the damn number. If you aren't going to call or get more info then this might aswell be a "dear Facebook" post.

The first words out of there mouth are going to be the name of the person who they want info on. This isn't rocket science.
