I know St Bernard and St Tammany will still arrest. Jefferson too I’m sure.

And the bar just keeps getting lowered...

Agreed. There needs to be another agency; when things escalate then escalate use of force or personnel

Normally when you get pulled over with a suspended license in alabama, they impound your car, so you have to settle up before you can get it out. Tickets get paid without anyone going to jail. Seems to work. Officers discretion on if an arrest is made.

What’s next, no tickets for expired brake tags?!?!
I thought we lived in a civilized culture! I weep for humanity!
How will these jurisdictions afford their armored tanks?!

Obviously because it "unfairly" targets a certain demographic. As if we are all equal so arrest demographics must be equal, so if any arrest demographic is "biased" in the wrong way.... Either make that not a crime anymore (legalize) or stop arresting for it. (Sanctuary)

I personally think we need to do something to separate police, the people we are supposed to count on to protect us, from also being the person that can ruin your day with a traffic ticket. It is an inherent conflict in the purpose of the job.
Many people learn to not trust police because of traffic stops, especially people that reside in cities
Traffic stops are, by far, the leading method of apprehending fugitive felons. I know this is a shocker, but those who rob, shoot, and jump bail also blow through stop signs, pass on the shoulder, and live stream on phones while driving.
All that aside, traffic enforcement absolutely contributes to public safety as well.

Shreveport Police isn't arresting for it either. I saw a lady get a ticket for driving on a suspended license. No insurance either, of course. Cop basically says, "I could arrest you for this right now but it's not really worth the hassle, so I'm writing you a ticket." Ok, so it's not worth the hassle for the police but we'll make the tax-payers deal with it in a much worse way by letting these uninsured assholes continue to drive around.

So because there are so many criminals, minor criminals will get away.
This is how you become Mexico.

Not defending this. But technically it seems to allow officers to arrest people for suspended/expired licenses. It doesn't seem to ban them from doing so.
With the risk of sounding stupid, is there actually a legal requirement that policemen arrest anybody they catch committing a crime anyway? While I would hope a policemen arrest somebody they witness committing a burglary, is there any actual legal obligation that they do so?

That is a straight up incorrect.

Drivers licenses and having insurance are racist white colonialism

It's correct, it just happens at the jail instead of in the police unit. It's still a tremendous waste of resources. JP, who is responsible for the most warrants other than Orleans itself, issues direct releases on 60% of warrants.

In other words: when the cops can't find a real reason to arrest someone after pulling them over on a pretense stop, they won't issue a ticket for the pretense itself.

Great step by them. Hope other places follow suit. I actually went to jail about six years ago in New Orleans for this very offense and it was just shitty.

Well they can't pursue anyone breaking the fricking law in lakeview, where an abundance of crime is happening, so this doesn't surprise me.

Under current law NOPD was mandated to arrest the person, and hold them until the other parish came to pick them up. In the vast majority of cases, the other parishes would take hours to pick up the phone, have someone run the warrant, then eventually say they weren’t coming to get them. All while the officer sits around. The law accomplished nothing and honestly is a pretty good example of cleaning up policy that looks good on paper but ends up wasting resources.
That is BS.
No officer sat around for hours while waiting on other jurisdictions to come pick up the arrested.
They take them to booking, book them and then are back on the street.
ETA: in Orleans they don't even have to take them to booking... they can call for a transport to come pick the arrestee up.

Honestly, I've had my DL expire before without my knowledge. I would hate to have to go to jail for overlooking that. Not having insurance though, I can't stand those people. Get into an accident where they're at fault, and you're basically screwed.

This bullshite right here is why insurance rates in this state consistently go through the roof

Expired (within reason) is one thing. Driving while suspended should be an automatic trip to jail.
