New Orleans council ends auto arrests for expired, suspended driver's licenses; here's why
BY JEFF ADELSON

New Orleans police officers would no longer be required to arrest motorists who have suspended, expired or revoked driver's licenses under an ordinance passed unanimously on Thursday by the City Council.

The ordinance, proposed by Councilwoman Helena Moreno and Councilman Jared Brossett, also discourages officers from making arrests for any minor traffic offense.

"We believe that precious police manpower should be spent on serious crimes ... and not spending hours on jailing individuals for minor offenses," Moreno said.

The ordinance goes next to Mayor LaToya Cantrell for her signature.

The move was prompted by the arrest of former City Councilman Oliver Thomas following a crash earlier this year. ...

Most of the idiots with suspended and revoked licenses should be put in prison for something else anyway. Most are TPOS thugs

IMO expired license should be a ticket. Not paying the ticket or failure to appear is a bench warrant and police should make good on arresting people for bench warrants, even if it's just traffic.

Suspended maybe should be an arrest straight away..

They'll likely still issue citations which will go unpaid and lead to warrant arrests. They'll figure it all out.

The article is being a bit disingenuous. They still have the discretion to arrest if they see fit, and will still arrest for things like DUI. The problem stems from people who have outstanding traffic tickets in neighboring parishes like Jefferson. Under current law NOPD was mandated to arrest the person, and hold them until the other parish came to pick them up. In the vast majority of cases, the other parishes would take hours to pick up the phone, have someone run the warrant, then eventually say they weren’t coming to get them. All while the officer sits around. The law accomplished nothing and honestly is a pretty good example of cleaning up policy that looks good on paper but ends up wasting resources.

All that does is allow people to continue down a path towards more failure.

The reason why there are arrests for stuff like that is supposed to be a deterrent to not get arrested.

But now, what’s the point in being responsible?

I had to drive on an expired license for a while because they wouldn’t renew because I was wrongfully charged a large fee for not having insurance. While I was waiting for the evidence I needed to prove I shouldn’t have a fee, I drove around terrified I’d get arrested.

This is an example of a policy does more harm than good and I’m ok with them not enforcing it if it actually means police power can be used where it is more necessary

I personally think we need to do something to separate police, the people we are supposed to count on to protect us, from also being the person that can ruin your day with a traffic ticket. It is an inherent conflict in the purpose of the job.

Many people learn to not trust police because of traffic stops, especially people that reside in cities

the reason his license was suspend was due to an unpaid ticket and missed court date in St. Tammany parish
