yeah typical for any decent size city.
I wouldn't call it typical, NO does have a higher crime rate than most cities with it's population size or higher. I also wouldn't feel scared going there either, you're right there is crime everywhere. It might cause me to reconsider if I were thinking about moving there, but I wouldn't think twice about a trip to NO. Chicago is eaten up with crime as well, but I'd love to go there.

I agree to some extent. I'd also say that the city has a much different feel crime wise since 2014 or so. The criminals have figured out that NOPD has essentially been neutered.

No kidding
If you're being influenced by a few rednecks who live in NW Louisiana about your travel plans, I honestly feel bad for you
With that said. It'll be interesting to see the tourist numbers in a few years. People are still visiting in droves so the current crime trend hasn't been much of any deterrent.

But I will also say, that the biggest change overall has been the 24hour news cycle and all the 'wolves is unraveling' Chicken littles that have gotten progressively worse over the years.
I disagree with this as it pertains to New Orleans crime. The 1990s saw terrible crime in the city but it was not nearly as intrusive into areas like the French Quarter. It was centered mostly in the bad neighborhoods, now it's spreading. Was there no crime in the FQ during the 1990s? Of course not, but there wasn't the number of issues there are the last few years. You can note this on local 5pm news. 24/7 news stations have nothing to do with it.

Of course I love my city and will take up for it when I can. I agree the crime is really bad and has been too bad for my entire life... the upward tick in violent crime is unsettling. But I will also say, that the biggest change overall has been the 24hour news cycle and all the 'wolves is unraveling' Chicken littles that have gotten progressively worse over the years. Just look at the national news everyday. You see people saying 'yeah you have to watch your kids more closely, there are so many crazies out there these days' and this is across the board nationally. Every single thing is broadcasted now and everyone has some hot take on face book. 15 years ago people in BR would have maybe read a little about the statues in the advocate. Now every redneck in New Roads is spending several hours a day online talking about BANNOLA and how they are done with the city
Agreed, I know people who won't let their kids out of their sight and have told me they won't let the kids go play with other kids down the street and explore the great outdoors in general because there are "crazy poeople" everywhere and it's supposedly not like it used to be. As a result the kids are fat and I'm sure will have social issues. The news preys on this but the worst is social media, every little thing gets posted and shared and it's a constant bombardment of omg it's a war zone outside so these overprotective moms let video games babysit their kids instead. And to tie into the thread, people also don't visit a city they otherwise would have as a result of the paranoia.

Looks bad on paper but there are positives to having a black mayor, number 1 being skulls can be cracked in a manner that would look bad for a white mayor.
You mean like in BR and Baltimore? Dude, no offense but your head cannot be shoved that far up your arse

3 weekends ago, the Girlfriend and I Took my four kids to the Aquarium, Insectarium, and late lunch at Russell's Marina Grill before heading back to BR.
Was a great day except I left my favorite LSU hat on the self serve parking kiosk in Canal Place.
Mitch and goons ain't stopping us from visiting a national treasure in New Orleans.

If you read this board you would think people are scared to death and changing travel plans by the droves. I will tell you it's a fact that majority of the tourist aren't keeping up with Nola on an everyday basis like people from this board or who are originally from here. I talk to out of townsite ALL THE TIME. Nearly daily and I swear on everything that less than 10% have even a clue the crime rates when I tell them.
There is a running joke on here with LSU31always that he brings about once we were in a bar and I was drunk arguing with a huge group of tourist. They were telling me I was full of shite about crime being a problem or something like that.... like i said most of the tourist aren't from SLa and not reading Nola.com and Tiger Droppings

Your yawn emoti does nothing to take away from my post. Yes, NOLA is absolutely a dumpster fire now. But the goal post for convention atendence etc constantly gets moved.

You know the police in Amsterdam dress in civilian attire and walk around the city streets observing goings on. Eventually the NOPD will have to come to the same evolution in policing the Quarter.
At one time the NOPD did this. We knew one policeman who was one one such patrol. A naval ship came into port, and a number of police were out, with the troops, and dressed in the same naval uniforms.
Within one day, the pictures of the police had been circulated through the 'underground' types in the quarter and their ability to be assaulted and thus make arrests went to zero.
This was about twenty years ago. Wonder what changed?

back what up? You don't think there was any crime last night in cities all across America?
I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. But apparently, you really are this stupid.

There is some truth to this, but sometimes it's hard to deny the numbers.
You have far more NOLA experience than me but IIRC, the crime in the FQ is on the rise since the NOPD was gutted. Is that true or is that just a product of the 24 hr news cycle?

I'm a soon to be CPA, and all of the violence coupled with the animosty and lack of long term infrastructure has taken New Orleans out of the running for my permanent home.
I can't promise that I would have stayed in NOLA throughout my prime tax paying years, but it would have atleast had a chance. As it is, the pieces of shite that don't contribute run things because they outnumber the people who do, and young professionals are seeing that and going peace out.

And you don't think the current dumpster fire and the uptick in violent crime IN TOURIST areas won't have an affect?
The city needs a mayor with a gloves off attitude toward crime, especially in tourist areas.
They need to enact a law similar to the "speeding fines doubled in work areas" crap.
You commit a violent crime in a tourist area? No plea deals. No bargaining. Throw the book at them.
And as I type this, nopd just tweeted about a double shooting that just happened.

Man the crime in the quarter has always been there. Bartending inthe quarter 15 years ago I remember bars having signs and policies that workers leave in pairs of twos. Back then you always heard people bitching about the iberville projects needed to be removed and that was the biggest issue. Back then it seemed like you were having people stabbed and robbed instead of knocked out. It was always more of a blurb on the local news. You didn't have near as many cameras so it wasn't played over and over and didn't have every dick John and harry on FB talking about it and how it's 'now a war zone'
Not saying there isn't an uptick and it's not a problem, I'm saying that it is just much MUCH more publicized.
