Oof.

The History of Doctor

quote:

What to Know Doctor comes from the Latin word for "teacher" and originally referred to a small group of theologians who had approval from the Church to speak on religious matters. Eventually the term saw greater use referring to qualified academic and medical professionals.

Depends on the setting, but for the most part only use DR in a professional setting. Any other time just introduce yourself as your name.

This. When you introduce yourself to a neighbor, leave the Dr out. When introducing yourself to peers, then it's a suitable situation.

Only one percent of the population hold a doctoral degree. Going by the OP, you would think they grow on trees.

should tell you something about the guys in this thread.

a small subset triggers them by refering to themselves as doctor, a title in which they earned.

people that get triggered by this or an NP going by practitioner, yea the jealousy is oozing out of the post.

What about the preachers who refer to themselves as "doctor?" I suppose they could have a doctorate in divinity?

Ph.D is the single most difficult and prestigious degree. PERIOD! The MD is a first professional degree.

I'm pretty sure you can get a PhD at a seminary. They study philosophy, theology......you know, some of the disciplines our species has pondered over since the dawn of time.

Doctor comes from the Latin word “docere” meaning to teach or scholar. So PHDs actually have a more valid claim to the term.

…but frick call them doctor in non academic settings

You either need meds or need to have your current meds changed.

Plus, a refresher in English Comp 101 wouldn’t be a bad thing either.

Agree. MD is the only people I’d call doctor. Unless you were Doctor John. He’s the only non-MD I’ll acknowledge as such.

Yes, I've read the motivational Purina posters at our vet clinic as well.

Yes, because all doctors are exactly the same. It's certainly not a case where some loud attention whores with an agenda pretend to speak for the entire group.

Even if you are just talking medical - you are leaving out osteopathic physicians, who also have to go through:

quote:

a more challenging 4 year degree followed by a residency.

And then we are leaving out PhD's. Most of them don't demand to be called Doctor outside of an academic setting. But the ones that do are weird.

It's always the social sciences types that demand that you refer to them as doctor.
