A woman was arrested and ordered held in jail after allegedly stabbing a dentist and attacking two other people on Wednesday inside a dental office on Magazine Street.

Sharon Stewart, 55, will be jailed at the Orleans Justice Center without bond as she awaits a Feb. 15 Gwen's Law hearing to determine whether she poses a threat to the public at large.

A prosecutor at a hearing Thursday afternoon said the dentist is likely to lose her left eye.

Slight and bespectacled, with an attentive manner and matronly short hair, Stewart's shackled appearance in Magistrate Court capped an alleged monthlong spree of threats, arson and attacks, including some with a knife and hammer.

"What?" Stewart said with surprise when Magistrate Court Commissioner Jay Daniels read that she'd been booked on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of attempted second-degree murder over a Wednesday attack on her dentist.

At around 11:59 a.m., Stewart allegedly entered the business in the 2100 block of Magazine Street and asked to speak to the dentist. Another employee heard a "commotion" and turned to see Stewart facing the dentist and brandishing a knife with a three-inch blade, police said in court documents.

"I got stabbed in the face," the dentist said as blood streamed from her eye, according to police.

Stewart allegedly chased the dentist, brandishing a knife, and tried to attack two more employees. One of them attempted to intervene, before the dentist locked herself in a room.

Stewart fled on foot, police said. The dentist sustained stab wounds, including to her left eye and the right side of her neck, a prosecutor said Thursday.

An armed guard stood watch on Thursday morning at the dental center, where a manager declined to comment on the incident.

New Orleans police canvassed the area, arrested Stewart and booked her late Wednesday into Orleans Justice Center.

Stewart also is being held on aggravated arson and aggravated battery in connection with two additional incidents from January, court records show.

In the Jan. 31 arson, Stewart allegedly tried to set a man's Hoffman Triangle area apartment ablaze with a match. Her victim, who goes by "Hobo," told police Stewart had beaten him with a hammer and threatened him in the days leading up to the arson.

quote:

When he saw her arrive at his residence in the 3700 block of Washington Avenue, he locked the door, but Stewart yelled at him through his open window, demanding he "take his b---ch a-- outside," according to an affidavit for an arrest warrant.

Then she lit a match, set the window on fire and fled. A neighbor helped "Hobo" extinguish the blaze. Detective Joshua Pleasant smelled gasoline on the scene when he inspected the charred window, according to the affidavit.

At the time of the alleged stabbings and arson, Stewart was constrained by a protective order signed Jan. 29 by Civil District Court judge Lakeisha Jefferson. An acquaintance of Stewart filed a petition for protection from stalking in Civil District court on Jan. 9, alleging that Stewart threatened her and her daughters in an Ulta parking lot, then followed her to a neighboring CVS when they tried to evade her.“(Stewart) re-iterated her claim that my coworker and I had stolen her identity and food stamps,” the document reads. “She followed me into the store, repeatedly telling me she would hurt me, hurt my girls and would come for my family when the time was right.”

I have so many questions about all of this. Why did she stab the dentist? Why was she not in jail after multiple violent offenses in less than a month?

This count needs to be charged as well.

It’s about time these judges start paying the price for letting criminals walk our streets freely.

Should have been printed on thicker paper.

PO's are and have always been useless for anything other than stacking charges.

People that commit arson are next level crazy. And the NOLA justice system just ignored it and put her back out on the streets and now an innocent woman is probably going to lose her career when she was just doing her job and minding her own business. I know it's par for the course with JW and his office, but shite like this still surprises me.

If you're smart, you'll tell your children to move out of state after they graduate and start working. Don't encourage them to make a life in this place.

Yea move to Texas where you can be killed by an illegal and nothing will happen.

The sooner some of you start accepting you can’t outrun the bullshite any longer the better. This is an American problem.

I've already informed mine that they aren't allowed to attend any college in Louisiana. My generation of family members will be the last that has roots in this state. The year my youngest turns 18, we're outta here.

Y'all can sit around and be murdered by some worthless fricker that just walked out of jail thanks to an activist judge/DA here. My tax dollars deserve to go elsewhere.

She hasn’t ever been arrested for any of them, chief. She’s been roaming around with warrants out for her if you bother to read the article. Also, why is the prior victim going to civil court to get a protective order instead of filing criminal charges?
