If you ever get something stolen and you see someone on the street with it.. Call the police and tell them you see a dude who has items that were stolen from your house.. Nothing will happen... So you either just let it go or try to get it back.
When I was in HS some dude came in our back yard through a field behind my house. They got into our shop and stop my mom's bike. She saw him through the window as he was leaving, she went get her gun and shot at the dumbass. He was far off, but probably scared the shite out of him.
She called the police, they told her "we will keep an eye out". The next day that dumbass was riding down the street with the bike. She called the police and they asked if she could prove it was hers. She got in my dad's truck and followed him. He went into the hospital that was closest to us. She looked to see if it had the mark her bike had and it did. she got it, put it in the truck and called the police and told them never mind she just did their job for them.

These dumbasses don't understand that having that mindset towards piece of shite thieves is why this problem has gotten so out of hand in the first place. Giving criminals any kind of justification for their crimes or throwing them a pity party only makes them more liable to do it again, obviously. This isnt rocket math.
