re: NOLA: "New airport 'like a Mercedes with flat tires'"

Never understood the hatred for old MSY. Sure it was dated looking except for concourse D but a breeze to get in or out of. Never waited very long for security although I do like to get to airport early.
Food generally sucked at MSY but who goes to an airport to eat.
Couple years ago changing planes at Phoenix had to go through TSA twice in two different buildings, took over two hours and missed connection. This despite having already gone through TSA in Yuma. Never understood why.
Tempers flared in line and did see a fight between two females who looked like they should be on scooters in candy aisle at Wal Mart.

The “new” will quickly go away.
Most were probably packed because they aren’t up to speed on service.
If they want to REALLY help the traveling taxpayers they will let Southwest move back to the old terminal and leave the other airlines to the Landrieu boondoggle.
That would be GREAT!!! Lots of room to expand, Easy in and out.

Absolutely. I've flown out of there a whole bunch, never have been hung up in security and flights always on time. I'm still pissed they did away with it and will be flying out of BR now

Flew out on Friday and back in on Sunday. Typical New Orleans:
Looks good on the surface, not functional, not productive, poorly planned, poorly executed and those people working there don’t give a crap.
Place was filthy the walk ways hadn’t been cleaned in days and the bathrooms were a mess.

Miitch and his cronies have made their money and are now gone. And they did it in full view. The New Orleans media is a joke. I saw this coming when a Mitch took down R E Lee to distract from the airport. The media covered the statues but not what was going on in Kenner.

Yep.
Could have put new flooring and some other renovations for a fraction of the cost of this new debacle.

This mess infuriates me in two ways.
First, for less than half the price they could have rebuilt the old MSY one concourse at a time. They had plenty of space between the old airport and the FEDEX facility to build a new concourse and then tear down and build one additional one at a time so that eventually the finished product is slightly northwest. No need for new interstate ramps. They could have build additional parking space there and a electric train loop to shuttle people to parking and rentals and a transportation hun for uner/lyft/taxi.
Second, they build a new one and obviously did not research other airports especially concerning the uber/lyft/taxi setup. They also totally flopped on the design in my opinion. Everyone makes modern looking designs. Why not make New Orleans unique and have a modern airport with a French Quarter look externally and internally? Except for the mural and the band this place looks like nowhere in particular. The TSA backup is totally beyond my comprehension because the corrupt and inept Mayor sold us on the time savings the new airport would offer in that area.

Which corrupt and inept mayor?
Mitch was responsible for this mess but LaToya probably insisted things open on time rather than have problems addressed.

We fly out Nov 26th, usually do Park N Fly or US Park. With the current issues, are one or the other of those two a better option currently?

it’s somewhat conspicuous how many posters come into these threads to describe how great their experience was, when every night we have pictures of what a clusterfrick it is.
There's nothing conspicuous about an airport being its busiest on a Sunday

It was about a year and a half LATE in opening.

It is New Orleans so you can insert any Mayor.
In this case, Landrieu handpicked the folks who got contracts so I put it on him. How the hell do you not design the internal traffic flow better when you get to start from SCRATCH which most airports do not and you get to research what worked and did not work at other airports?

Thats a fair point... it looks like we'll have to get to the airport no less than 3 hours early when we fly out at Mardi Gras. Had never had an issue with making a flight on time at MSY before and that included times when we'd show up within half an hour of boarding knowing it'd only take 5 minutes to get through security.

I was there Thursday night and Sunday night.
Parked Thursday and went to the gate with my daughter.
Sunday I drove around the circle 3 times and finally pulled to the curb while I waited on her.
All in all I thought everything was fine. Security Thursday wasn't bad.

Why is this impressive? I would hope it is clean, it is brand new.

Once they got it, The Uber/Lyft at Msy was actually pretty good too.
Id try to make sure I am on the 740 or 830 back to Houston to avoid any delays in that dump.

I flew out of the old terminal on the 3rd. TSA let me through the scanner with my shoes on, a big tube of toothpaste I'd forgotten in my travel bad, and a couple other items.
I've been flying a lot the past three years, and that was the most inept security checkpoint I've ever encountered.

I think the issues at security and behind it are due to the shared-service nature of all three concourses vs. the separate ones before.
Previously, you could easily staff security and restaurants because you knew the times and number of flights you’d see in your concourse. Now, that’s a crapshoot. They’ll figure it out...hopefully.
Can’t speak for the issues with uber/lyft line, though. Only thing I can think of is a capacity issue vs. the previous setup.

That's always been my first option. I'd rather have a connecting flight in Houston or Dallas than drive to N.O. and back. Plus I'm close to home if a flight is cancelled.
