NOLA: "New airport 'like a Mercedes with flat tires'"

On the first weekend at New Orleans' new airport terminal, lines were long and supplies of Bloody Mary mix ran short.

Since its opening Wednesday, the new terminal at Louis Armstrong International Airport has been showered with compliments for its cleanliness, food options and architecture, but for many, the praise has been overshadowed by complaints — typically involving long lines.

By that measure, Sunday was the worst day yet.

“Man, it was scary,” said Marshall Law, who ended up missing his 7:10 a.m. flight to Houston after spending an hour and 25 minutes waiting to get through security.

These old dudes were about to start fighting people,” Law said, after the group noticed travelers who had been behind them had somehow made their way in front. “It could’ve gotten really, really ugly.

There isn't even a Popeyes in the new airport!

That led overburdened airport workers to yell at those breaking through, “Get back in line!” Rowe said.

Law was similarly shocked when he saw the crowd, saying, “There’s no way that’s security. There’s no way.”

Oh my friend that was definitely New Orleans natives who are working security!

Sunday morning, Jared Diener was also looking for a drink at the new terminal but was met with “tragic” news upon getting to the bar at Ye Olde College Inn, which said it had just run out of Bloody Mary mix.

Law said he knew things weren’t quite right when he returned his rental car to the airport around 5 a.m., only to find the computer system was down — the start of what was far from a good first impression of the new airport.

“If it is like this on a Sunday morning, you don’t want to be anywhere near this place during Mardi Gras,” he said. Truer words have never been uttered!

I passed the exits at 10:15 and 11:30 and there was zero traffic.

Was surprised by that.

The important things are that the Landrieus got kickbacks. Stop being so selfish.

Got through security in no time.

I’m flying in on the 24th and out on the 29th - hopefully it’s improved by then. I have TSA Pre-Check but it seems like that might not make a difference

I'd definitely miss my flight. I'm not getting there at 5:00 for a 7:00 flight. I don't know anyone who has ever done that.

Inside the airport is very nice. Clean. As nice as Chicago, Atlanta or Houston. That said, the in and out to get there and get out of there is piss poor. An hour to escape the airport is not acceptable. No roads built to support the traffic an airport like this requires. Great investment in the airport, but if you have to wait 3 years on the infrastructure - that means someone screwed up BIG TIME!!

And if you have this poor infrastructure issue, fine. Then pay the cost to the Jeff Parish, Kenner or NOLA cops needed to man every corner within a quarter mile of the airport to direct traffic. This airport could really move us forward, but lack of planning and pathetic people in politics ruin it - AS ALWAYS.

Its my hope that Jon Bel Edwards gets voted out as a result of his lack of planning for the airport road situation. He along with Mitch the Coward and LaToya Pitbull face are responsible for this. NOLA accepting 2nd rate garbage has to be changed.

I have three coworkers that live along the Northshore who drive to GPT to travel to work to avoid MSY and after taking a flight from there recently I understand why.

A new terminal is lipstick on a pig as long as the same shite people are inside the building.

Bailey Huntsman
@itsmebaileyh
I’m not saying I’m the most well traveled person, but I’ve flown in and out of a lot of airports and I’ve never seen anything like the shite show that is the new #MSY
I don’t think we’re gonna make our flight in 45 minutes...been here a good while now

The two responsible for the infrastructure shite show are gone. They were both too worried about the national stage.

It is amazing hearing the two drastically different types of experience people are having.

Other than having nothing but connections, GPT would be my choice as well if I lived on the Northshore. Fast everything and even free parking.

The traffic was so bad it's like they built the airport without planning how people would access it from I-10.

I said it all along

The old MSY was fantastic if you used airports for traveling

If you used airports for eating out or shopping I could see why you wanted a new kne

I'm told the pre-check line can be just as long and might be slower since it is where they direct all the wheelchairs, etc.

The plane was early but spent 26 minutes taxiing to the gate and then spending a few more minutes sitting there before they opened the door.

Finally, I don't see how the arrivals pick-up won't be a mess with how it is designed and how people in New Orleans act. It seems like taxis won't wait in line (I saw 4 jump the line in my 3 trips through the pick-up area. And have fun trying to merge to where you can stop with all the taxis trying to merge left and leave.

It is a 1.3 billion dollar nightmare.

Other fun tidbits:
The new MSY website didn't have the flight listed at all.
They switched the luggage carousel without announcing it to ANYONE.

Funniest part - it took me close to 1.5 hours to drive to the airport (from River Ridge), pick up someone with a checked bag, and leave the airport. There was a broken down Park'N Fly shuttle on the main airport exit road (not Bainbridge) which shut the exiting traffic down to 1 LANE. Traffic was backed up past the roundabout.
