I’m sure Android has something similar.

Family Link is the Google equivalent. Can monitor whats used, whats installed, are able to disable apps, set screen limits, set quiet hours. Also can ping the phone at any time for GPS. Yes, it even has the ability to lock the phone down to only receive calls and texts from select contacts as well.

I've seen teenagers have total f*cking breakdowns when parents have taken their phones away -- like gone completely f*cking insane. It's like their phone is their total f*cking life.

I don't have kids so I'm not going to give advice, but I witnessed something similar with a girl I was dating. Her daughter was constantly on Snap, taking picture of us eating and videoing us when we didn't know it. It was pretty annoying.

One night, her mom took her phone from her because she wouldn't go to sleep. The 15 year old turned into a whiny 5 year old instantly. It was pathetic. She cried, threw a tantrum, and was literally begging for the phone for 5 more minutes. It was disturbing.

So a bunch of y’all are not familiar with Screentime in Family Share for iPhones? I can literally see every app, usage by app, and can disable individual apps or all of them with a simple tap. And they can’t add anything without first asking me for approval. This isn’t terribly hard and it’s built right into your phones and works quite well. They know I can brick their phones with a couple of taps (and yet still allow access to specific contacts like their mother and myself). I’m sure Android has something similar.

This is good to know, as I have a young daughter that i am sure will be getting a cellphone in the next few years. But at the same time, i feel like policing her cell phone activities would deprive me of any sanity i still have

I’ve seen this posted in this thread and have heard of it but have never witnessed anything like this. Yes, that’s disturbing, I never spanked my daughter, damn sure did my sons, but if she’d have pitched a fit like that over a phone, wife would have beat the hell out of her. All my kids are pretty nonchalant so they just shrugged their shoulders and went and did something else anytime a phone was taken away.

My friend's 14 year old daughter ended up harming herself due to stuff spread about her over snapchat. She's ok now, but she is no longer allowed to use it. I think for kids her age, it's the easiest way of communication. And then there's no record of it (unless you screen shot it) because it disappears so you can't see communication records like you can with text messages.

I have another friend in her 30s who uses snapchat to communicate with her married boyfriend. So there's that.

My kid doesn't have a cell phone yet, but when he does, snapchat won't be allowed.

I hate to say it, but you’re gonna want to know. I know the kinda stuff I was checking out at 14 and it happens much earlier now. Not giving them a phone won’t really change it. If they go to school, their friends will simply show them stuff on theirs. There really is no shielding them. Have all the important talks early on and be candid with your kids. They aren’t as “in the dark” on things as we naively believe.

teens quit regularly texting around 2013ish. First it was Kik, then they moved on to Snapchat.

And nobody under the age of about 30 uses email.

My daughter is 12. They all use FaceTime. None of her friends have Snapchat.

My daughter didn’t even know what the “phone” app was. I showed her just last week.

Amazes me how many parents don’t utilize this. I strictly control my kids screen time, depending on behavior or if they are on the device too much.

On the best of days (weekends) they get a max of 2 hrs. Then it shuts down. On school days it’s 45 min per day.

There is absolutely zero reason for a teenager or a married person to have Snapchat

NONE

Life was so much better before cell phones and social media.

Came here to say this. I fought this battle with my kids- but at that time it was Facebook. Parenting is difficult enough, but these struggles over phones and social media make it so much more challenging.

No kid and/or married adult should have Snapchat.

Snapchat is so 2016. Every youngster is on tik tok and it’s spreading to adults

I mean he isn't wrong I'm almost 30 and know people who use snapchat to text. It's kinda weird but its the way it is now

I'm sure it is way worse for kids these days I doubt any of them actually text their friends normally

Just let the baw have snap chat it isn't nearly as big of a deal as having something like facebook at that age

Sure is. I had it downloaded on my laptop a couple months ago when I didn't have a phone for a few weeks

I'm sure he has it anyway and just logs in on friends' phones and then has them keep up his "snap streak". He can also log in on a computer. He's just now finding this a pain in the butt and wants to be able to do it in front of you.

If you don't protect your children's online activity no one will.

You're exactly right to know all about their online habits until you know they're old enough to handle it.
