Nobody buys mid-grade gasoline

Check the counter on the pump next time you fill up. 87 octane has the most, about double the 93, and then 89 almost none at all.
What’s the psychology behind this?
If you do buy it, why?
I buy the cheapest, because who cares.

I do. keeps my luxury vehicle from knocking and it is cheaper than 93

It meets the minimum octane for some cars, if there wasn't a market for it at all, they'd stop producing it.

It's better in a 302
But you know nothing about that

Some engines need higher than 87 but don't need 93.
But then, you're better off mixing half and half 87 and 93 for 90 at the same price as 89.

In my experience, no car has instructed me to specifically put mid-grade in it, so I don't see it as an option.

It's the minimum my car requires.

I'm not sure why it's still offered either.
I've never seen a make or model that says minimum 89 octane. Always premium only, or minimum 87.

I think some of us are practical, and the rest of y’all buy 93.

I think all 5.7 Hemis require 87 octane

I do. Feels like the most sensible option.

It was my understanding that mid grade gas is not produced at the refinery, but that it is mixed at the pump by blending regular and premium.

When your vehicle is over 40 years old,. It won't play you're Taylor swift on the radio either. It'll put your arse in a three on tree and you have to deal with it

That's what early 2000 Fords required. Expeditions anyway. The manual pointed out 87 was the only fuel to use.

I use it. My car calls for premium, but the guy who services it said that I should use mid grade instead. He explained that it had something to do with the ethanol content and water and the premium gas sitting in the tanks too long, thus lowering the octane something something something. He knows more about cars than me, so I'm taking his advice.

You are correct. Mid grade is just a mix of premium and regular that is mixed at the pump. I'm dubious on if the pump mixes it equally or are you really just paying more for regular. Seems like something a gas station owner could exploit.

If 89 is keeping you from knocking, regular will do the same. Your vehicle has sensors that adjust for lower octane. Midgrade is a scam

You expect oters to do that "complicated math"?
If it dont add to 350, wont happen here.
