No more phones in the driver seat starting Oct. 1 - new Oregon law

(B) “Driving” does not include when the motor vehicle has stopped in a location whereit can safely remain stationary and:(i) Is pulled over on the side of, or is pulled off, a roadway;(ii) Is in a designated parking space; or(iii) Is required to park in the roadway to conduct necessary utility maintenance work.

Impossible to enforce, unfortunately. Hopefully it deters people.

it amazes me how many people have their cell phones to their cheek driving around. I thought everybody used the built in features like bluetooth to talk.

Waiting at a stop light in the morning one day, I could see 6 other drivers. 5 of them were either on the phone or fiddling with their phone

My mom lives in Oregon. She told me the other day that cops in Oregon exist to write tickets to people on their phones.

Yeah they try that on military bases too like the one I work at on Redstone Arsenal. They catch a few...but I still see 5-6 people a day with a cell phone glued to their face at quitting time driving to the gates.

It amazed me last night how many people were driving like they were texting and when we passed them on the interstate they were doing exactly that. It scares the shite out of me to see just how many people are not really paying attention while they drive.

So they can't use their map features to get where they are going? This seems to be biased in favor of people who own cars nice enough to have sat nav.

Yeah, that sucks. I don't want to have to go back to that dash mount Garmin POS GPS that I had. I need real time traffic updates.

Conflicted.
On one hand, most people are pretty stupid, and I'd rather not die because they're checking insta likes while driving. In that regard I somewhat like it.
On the other hand, a lot of us are capable of driving pretty safely while scrolling through twitter at a long red light, or glancing at google maps (while driving one handed like 95% of males do around town). For reasonable people, it's not hard to decide when you can make limited use of a phone and when you shouldn't.

I got passed one time by a guy with his phone in one hand, a cup of coffee in the other hand, and apparently steering with his knees.

Pull over, type in the address and then reenter traffic. I hate more frivolous laws, but I'm 100% for this one. People can't tricking drive without the distraction of a phone. This just multiplies it.

All they need are to make a few examples of offenders and then word gets around.
I would love such a law here. Every morning and evening on my drives to/from work I will see at least a half-dozen people texting while driving (including cops).

The last two accidents I was in, both were women on their cell phones that caused it.

As far as talking on the phone goes, I use bluetooth, and I rarely make calls. I only receive them.
This law has "this is why we can't have nice things" written all over it. Because of stupid and narcissistic, oblivious people, we all suffer.
