Is this because of the style/age of the pumps or is it possible to retrofit them and they just haven't?
Silver Spoon money,huh?

How about fricking entergy keeping the power on !!!
You serious Clark?
Yes. The power goes out here at least five times a month. To me, it’s a lot bigger issue than the pumps.

People act like flooding happens nowhere else. NOLA has shitty governance, sure, but EVERY bad thing that possibly happens here is not always because of it. There was a shite ton of rain in a very short time. Came up to cars on my street. All gone on less than 30 minutes.
The post you responded to was making reference to/fun of the excuses coming out of the Landrieu camp after a routine August shower flooded all of mid city last in 2017. They said that no system in the world could keep up with the rainfall, despite it being a relatively benign storm. They said everything was working at max capacity, until it was revealed that most of those pumps weren’t working and had been offline for months and only one turbine was powering what pumps were online.
You’re right that flooding happens everywhere in certain circumstances - for instance, the BR floods in 2016. But the majority of NOLA’s flooding problems are self inflicted. Following the 2017 flooding of Mid City, it came out that millions earmarked for improvement to the pump system were never used, and the repairs (which requires the turbines/pumps to be offline) were scheduled during hurricane season.
The catch basins were never cleaned and subsequently 46 tons of Mardi Gras beads were found to be clogging the basins.
Fast forward to 2018 when a water boil was issued and it came out that a single SWB employee was in the pump building trying to fix the problem.
NOLA residents aren’t wrong for asking for a minimum level of competency from its leadership. That said, they deserve the leadership that gets elected.

I am literally watching the water rise on my back patio. And it’s sunny.

New Orleans still have streets inundated with water?
Posted on 5/12/19 at 6:45 pm to Mudminnow
Nah. I don’t think it even made it in any houses from what I can tell. Same as the much talked about flood from last summer.
I am hearing of cars that got flooded out all over the metro area though

I drove from Uptown to Chilly Gentilly at 9 and didn't see any street water. I bypassed the Franklin exit underpass since it's know to carry water.

I am not in New Orleans. The Amite River is what is giving me trouble.
All that rain has to go somewhere.

Not always the case, but I don't have any in depth knowledge of this particular situation. I'd imagine we aren't talking about a simple 480k breaker and motor.

they do draw them down in anticipation of major events like hurricanes, but the earthen canals need to keep some water in them at all times.
Many of the old pumps really can't be automated. They used to keep the stations manned 24/7, but budget cuts...

NOLA gets screwed because we have the most incompetent public utility (S&WB) in the country, combined with the most incompetent private utility (Entergy) in the country

Most of the pump system is 80-100 years old. Automation wasn't a thing back then...
