I really have a problem with American home ownership being at such low levels among millenials and other groups, yet seeing chinese, russian, iranian tycoons coming here and gobbling up all this residential property and leaving them vacant because they are simply used as vacation homes or "income" property. California home prices would be so so so much lower if chinese cronies were banned from buying them.

I can't think of any negative ramifications of this policy, except for the moral argument that it is cruel to prevent foreigners from being able to own homes here.

NZ isn't some backward nation, they are generally progressive, so it tells you this idea may have come credence.

I support it

quote:

The New Zealand government has passed a ban on foreigners buying existing homes in the country in a bid to tackle soaring house prices and rising homelessness, Al Jazeera and The Guardian reported.

The Overseas Investment Amendment bill was passed by parliament on Wednesday and is designed to make housing more affordable for New Zealanders, particularly first time buyers. It follows a surge in the number of overseas buyers coming to New Zealand to buy property in recent years.

This would be such a great financial relief for many americans who no longer have to bid up their offers for housing to outcompete some foreign tycoon.

Drunken Americans are the only other people who could probably haka better than New Zealanders, so I don’t see what the big problem is.

Isn’t New Zealand hard up for white collar and skilled workers? This sounds quite counterproductive if they’re trying to get people to move there.

Hey! Come move to New Zealand and work! We really need you. Oh.... but you can’t buy a home. Sorry.

I'm skeptical now. People that think failed 19th century economic ideologies are viable also consider themselves "progressive"

It's no different than a tariff, and we all saw what happened last time home prices decreased...

sets out who needs a visa to travel to or stay in New Zealand

provides for the certification of immigration instructions, and the rules and criteria for the grant of visas

places responsibilities on people when they first arrive in New Zealand

sets out the requirements that visitors, migrants, students, employers and educators must meet and the information they must give to Immigration New Zealand

provides the grounds for deportation and creates criminal offences relating to immigration

New Zealand is awesome. This law doesn’t really change my view on that. I completely understand why they are doing it.

Kiwis can be pretty liberal at times but they have nothing on the Ausssies when it comes to hardcore progressive politics

Not in Ruston, Louisiana but yes it’s a big problem in many areas, particularly throughout the West Coast.

And it’s not just the U.S. (or New Zealand). Some Saudi prince just bought the most expensive house in France right near Versailles. As the world becomes more globalized this will increasingly occurs and yes it does affect the “Joe Schmoes” of certain areas.

Give me a break with this. What about the tax dollars and income the sale of that house brings in?

Australia and New Zealand both have very strict immigration and work laws related to immigrants. Comparing US and New Zealand is pretty absurd.

That’s like saying no white people can own a home in Hawaii, which most Hawaiians would probably approve of.

Bringing in the most amount of money for something is generally good business. Next time you sell your house, you should take the 2nd highest offer. Just because the highest may have been a foreigner.

You can't just build homes anywhere and everywhere. A lot of factors come into play.

One could obtain dual citizenship. I have a brother in law that worked there for 5 years. He can buy property. Finding something to buy for investment is difficult.

NZ is an island nation that gets rural real quick outside of areas like Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. However, in those areas and a couple others like Hamilton, you are going to auction to purchase.

The suburbs (1/2 our out or so) get affordable. But...the income potential isn’t exactly there.

On a side..

I will say this..their qualifications for citizenship and long term work visas is stringent.

You better have a job waiting, savings, good health and a degree or specialized trade to have a chance.

I have visited and if we go to shite...I am headed there.

New Zealand is a little too small to adopt that policy.
