There s nothing illegal or immoral about cutting costs where possible. If you cut the cost of operating a restaurant you can make the cost of serving customers lower and returns on the investment higher. It’s what every consumer operation should do, whether a restaurant, a clothing store, or a shoeshine specialist.

Correct. Maximizing profit should be the number one (or even only) concern of any business. Whatever it takes.

So, they try to artificially manipulate wages, and the market reacts to find a more efficient solution -- it's either that or pass the wage increases on to the customer.

Who'd a thunk it?

Don't worry about how we will pay for all the "free" stuff, we will just make sure the "rich" pay their fair share.

This isn't local law that they're skirting around, it's federal.

What drove them to outsource that position? NYC minimum wage is $16.50/hour (increasing to $17 in 2026) and has provisions for things like paid sick leave and family leave. Federal is $7.25.

How many people you think are wanting that cashier job?

You, of all people, should be very leery of that line of reasoning. I doubt you'll be able to work out the logical extension of your statement*.

*Hint: it's already being floated about in places like Canada and the Netherlands.

And when you have a business that relies on the general public for revenue, don't be surprised when people opt to not dine there because they don't approve of your business practices.

And they're paying far less than federal

So? If NYC pushed me to outsource a cashier job to the Philippines, I'm paying whatever the market rate is there.

If $3.25 is the wage for this type of job, bet your arse I’m spending part of my retirement in the Philippines with the low cost of living. In a good area though. Naturally

As opposed to socialism that inflates the cost of everything to over compensate unskilled labor?

My view on tips:

The tip is for the person who comes to the table, takes the order, brings the drinks, brings the food, circles back to check on needs, and brings the check and handles the payment.

If I am at a counter ordering my food, am handed a cup to get my own drink and utensils and napkins, wait for my food and take it to my table myself. I don’t see a need for a tip.

This is because the price of the food includes the cook, preparation, handoff to the counter, etc.

Sorry, virtual cashier application gets no 18% tip.

How is this different than HB1s being used for cheaper engineer and IT work?

Cheaper labor=cheaper service/product costs for me. Sounds good.

What do you think would have more people boycotting my business -- a "virtual" cashier that you interact with for 5 minutes or 20% higher prices to offset my increased labor costs? Hmm.

Seems like a cheat code for Capitalism. When you expand the market for cashiers to across the globe and for a pittance and the local worker's economic environment can be ignored it seems the equation is broken.
