My son and daughter bought me this Timex for Christmas. Have to say I love it.
This is exactly the one I have, but switched out an olive canvas band. I keep the leather one to change into for fancy occasions.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to winding?

There is some nostalgia involved as well. The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is manual wind. it would be sacrilegious to use an automatic movement in that watch. Omega has other variations of the Speedy that do use automatics.

Quite a few very high end dress watches are also manual.

Fun fact: one of the reasons NASA chose the manual wind Speedy was uncertainty whether autowind would work in zero G.

Thank you. I was trying to put it in kid friendly terms that they could tell their classmates about.

Well that’s just stupid. Why would anyone say that about someone’s father.

In 2023, mechanical watches are inherently unnecessary
lmao. My son works for Diebold servicing bank vault timelocks and every single one is mechanical.

Diebold went electronic in early 2000s and it was a complete disaster and moved everything back to mechanical.

Mechanical age is on the rise again.

My phone tells me what time it is. Even in other places. Like lots of places. And is one less thing to take off going thru TSA line at airport.

A fine watch is a little mechanical sculpture you wear on your arm. Some people collect paintings. Some people collect watches.

I have a lot of hobbies but one thing I like about watches is even if I take a few months of from reading/talking about watches or playing with movements on my workbench the hobby is still with me 24/7/365. The only time I don't have a watch on is when I am changing watches or when I am showering and I was wearing a watch without a waterproof band. So every time I look down at my watch throughout the day it brings me a little joy.

In fairness quartz movements in watches whether digital or analog display are anything but a disaster. They are better in every objective way save maybe EMP resistance but mechanical watches have a very different draw.

I have an old Seiko as a beater and it has a quartz 8F56 movement which is near HAQ accuracy and has a perpetual calender and a second time zone. Outside of changing the battery every 10 years the only time it gets adjusted is when I have it in a different time zone and even then the second time zone adjusts in one hour increments separate from the main time zone which doesn't have to be hacked. I don't own a single other watch no matter the price that is a better time keeping instrument as this inexpensive watch.

I love watches like you. Omega, IWC.. Automatic and manual winders. Simple pleasure staring down at a beautiful watch face or enjoying the ritual of setting the time and date when pulling it out of the watchbox or charging the lumen.

I've always loved watches.
