Have considered it, and if you're serious enough to buy one it does address my complaint.

I hear where you coming from. It just seems so redundant. Like packing around a calculator. Whatever. Carry on.

Wearing one of those today. They are unique in some interesting ways, e.g. the minimalist approach to the bezel.

I had one of these in the Army and damn do I miss it. Simple, elegant and I dug the OD green canvas wristband.
You should check out the Timex Camper line.

I had this one.
If I remember correctly, I bought it at the Ft. Knox PX with my first army paycheck. I wore that watch the whole time I was in the army and still have it in a cigar box of old army photos and stuff. I’ll bet if I put a battery in it, it would start right up.

My high school graduation gift in 1984 was a Seiko. My grandad had an Omega and my dad had a Bulova so watches have always interested me. I have way too many but my Omega is my favorite.

At the mall last week with the wife and drifted over to the watch displays and noticed a Seiko 5 Sport that had a somewhat similar look of a SKX007 that I have. Similar till I got a closer look. Definitely not the same watch. Looked at some reviews on the 5 Sports and the ratings are as wide as a football field. From "Hot Garbage" to "Excellent time piece for the money".
What's your thoughts on these and the 4R36 movement?
I think Seiko decided the SKX007 watches were too good for the money...
The 5 Sports versions are great watches for the money but compared to the "old" prices of the SKX007 watches they pale in comparison but them most everything does.
The Sports 5 "SKX" line are real dive watches like the venerable SKX007 but they have a lot more variety. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one and think they are a good value. You just can't compare them in value or functionality to the old SKX because that era is gone and the few NOS ones left command higher prices.
The 4r36 is a solid workhorse movement. IMO it is always a plus at the pricepoint Seiko charges for them. They aren't pretty and you aren't going to be able to regulate most of them for very high accuracy but they are more than good enough for the money.

With an automatic watch, you can wind endlessly. So, unless it has a power reserve indicator, you don't really know the state of the spring.
On almost every automatic movement you can feel and/or hear the mainspring slipping when it gets fully wound. I just hack mine when I put them into the watch box because I almost never wear a watch for more than 24 hours at a time. Even if I forget to hack it 10-20 winds is more than enough to get them running and they will wind throughout the day unless you are in a coma.

Your comments are always spot on and welcome and this was no different.
I had some free time and went further down the worm hole with the SKX & the 5KX. When Seiko announced the end of production for the SKX the faithful followers were expecting an upgrade to what would be known as the 5 Sports, 5KX.
Seiko already knew that to upgrade the SKX, the target MSRP of $300 would be hard to meet. They also knew that a large percentage of SKX owners rarely if any did any actual diving with it. The 5KX was introduced as more of a diver "style" watch instead of what it was replacing. Gone was the ISO cert, the screw down crown and the lume pip. Water resistance was reduced from 200M to 100M.
I think this might have given the 5KX somewhat a biased reaction from the SKX community. What was added to the 5KX soothed some of the sour feelings. The 4R36 with hacking and winding, a very nice lume and drilled lugs (Which I think is a great feature for quick swapping bracelets and straps.)
And, with 27 variations, if someone is considering a 5KX, I would think they could find something they would be pleased with.
And to add to your comment about accuracy, my 007 wasn't that accurate right out of the box and it appears Seiko is giving the 5SKX/4R36 a wide range of acceptance in that area as well.
I think I could warm up to this with a black rubber strap for an around the house, errand runner, tailgater.

Some are being assembled in the USA and have Swiss movements.
