They like the part about turning Russia from an agrarian serf nation into an industrial powerhouse that became arguably the second most powerful country in human history. The whole beating back Hitler thing helps his popularity too.

Totally agree, but we're looking at it from a western perspective. Apparently Russians believe it was an acceptable price to pay for abolishing Serfdom (basically slavery) which is what the majority of them were prior to 1920.

Context being without Stalin, Russia would not exist.
The rest of the leadership was frozen after the Nazi invasion.
Stalin expected his execution before they came on bended knee to still follow him.
It's an amazing what if?
It would probably still be a bunch of warlords in little fiefdoms akin to central Africa if Nazis were allowed to push in (still get eaten alive, it's Russia after all).
How would the rest of the world look without the Soviet shadow going to near the end.
