The thing that bugs me about this new airport is that we just spent $275 million renovating the old one and now we are just gonna let UPS and Fedex use it?
Directly for the Super Bowl. And about 15 years overdue.

The grants are. I have a friend that works for a contractor at the airport. Basically, if they don't use the grants, they're going to lose them. So they just spent all that money renovating the airport to turn around and build another one.

But what if an 18 wheeler flips on it's side on the new ramps?

yeah, but the economy didn't make $275 million from the Super Bowl
Still annoys me that we are now just going to not use it and let it be used for cargo liners

I would add that when the costs charged to the airlines come down we will be in a better position to attract more flights, new airlines (international?). That helps support the building of more gates.
All of that means more people, more companies doing business here, leading to more jobs for NOLA.

If the money is for the airport and the airport is using the money to better the airport, why are people complaining?

that was stupid of them to renovate in the first place, they've been planning on building a new one for 3-4 years now.

I like the new airport. I just wish they had used that $275 million they used to renovate the old one to make the new one $275 million nicer.

Just seems like fuzzy economic justification to me.

There better be a few Heavy (747,777, A380, etc) gates for this.

Flyover ramps connecting the airport to I-10. I don't know what's confusing about this.

I seriously doubt we get any international service that would require any of those aircraft. Maybe a 737 flight to Mexico or Central America or if we're lucky a 787 to London

Those won't be landing at MSY
International will be the carribean and mexico, not Sydney and Qatar

Why?
We have an adequate airport terminal. We're going to spend $826 million to build one that appears, at best, slightly more adequate?
I admittedly don't get this landing fee justification thing.

This isn't a rich state. We can't build infrastructure like Texas can or with grand ideas like the cool looking airport in Denver.
So, we take our modest upgrade and be happy about it.
As far as the logistics of landing fees and whatnot, I don't even know what that is.
